Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Two first-half goals lead Denison to victory over Wabash

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (October 11, 2022) – A pair of first-half goals from Niko Argyros and Rohan Tripathy helped propel the Denison University men's soccer team to a 2-0 road win over Wabash College on Tuesday.

Although it was a tale of two halves on the shot chart, the match was played quite evenly despite the score as Wabash (9-4-1 overall, 2-2 North Coast Athletic Conference) had 16 total shots and seven shots on goal compared to 14 total shots and six on goal by Denison (7-2-3, 2-0-1). One of the differences in the match, however, was the seven saves by Tommy Prokos en route to recording his third straight shutout.

The Big Red were able to get the scoring started in the 18th minute when Argyros caused a turnover from just outside the box before taking a shot that was saved by Wabash's goalkeeper Soren Russell. However, the deflection went right back to Argyros so he could easily deposit the ball into the bottom right corner to give Denison the early 1-0 lead.

Then late in the first half, a Denison corner kick by Luke Mattessich placed the ball beautifully for Tripathy to find the back of the net and extend the lead to 2-0 with 2:20 remaining.

After the Big Red outshot the Little Giants 11-6 in the first half, the second half saw Denison's defense tested as Wabash spent most of the half in the attacking third en route to holding an 11-3 advantage on shot attempts.

Wabash's best opportunity to score came in the 50th minute as the Little Giants' Jose Escalante was open in the box, but Prokos was able make the stop on the shot toward the bottom right of the goal.

The next good opportunity for Wabash to get on the scoreboard came in the 61st minute as a shot by Caleb Constano from outside the box was just over the crossbar, and then in the 68th minute, a shot from way outside by Bruno Zamora saw Prokos time his jump perfectly to swat the ball back over the net.

In the 80th minute, the Big Red nearly put the match out of reach as Corey Brunner tried to deliver the dagger before Russell was able to make the stop to keep Denison's lead at two.

The Big Red defense played well in the final 10 minutes to help preserve the shutout as three of the last four Wabash shots were not on goal while Prokos added a final save on a shot at the buzzer.

Head Coach Brandon Bianco said, "It was a really good team win today. We got strong contributions from some guys off the bench who lifted the group in big moments. Three points on the road today and another conference shutout is momentum we'll take into the weekend."

With the win, Denison is now for the moment, tied with No. 3 nationally-ranked Kenyon College for first place in the NCAC standings. However, the Owls play later on tonight at Oberlin College, which tied the Big Red 0-0 over the weekend.

Denison, meanwhile, will return home on Saturday, October 15, at 3 p.m. to face off against Hiram College.
