GRANVILLE, Ohio (January 22, 2022) – The Denison University women's basketball team played in its third straight home game, all this week, but unfortunately, the Big Red ended the homestand with back-to-back losses after falling 54-46 against Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon inside Livingston Gymnasium.
It was the second three-game homestand of the 2021-22 season for the Big Red, who shot only 29.3 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from three for the game.
Wittenberg led 16-12 after the first quarter and opened the second quarter on an 8-0 scoring run over the first four minutes of the period to take a 12-point lead up 24-12.
Denison, however, closed out the first half on a 5-0 run ending with four points by
Hannah Wynn to draw to within five at 27-22, and then started the second quarter with six straight points to take its only lead of the second half at 28-27. The three baskets early in the third quarter for the Big Red came via an offensive rebound and layup by Wynn, a pair of free throws by
Mikaila Carpenter and then a layup by
Isa Contreras assisted by
Maddie Goodman to put Denison ahead.
Unfortunately, Wittenberg answered in a big way with an 11-0 run over the next five minutes to go ahead by double digits again at 38-28 with three minutes left in the third quarter.
The Big Red were 0-for-5 with four turnovers during those five minutes, but then five straight points by Carpenter got Denison back to within five at 38-33 with 1:46 left in the period, and it was a five-point game at 40-35 entering the fourth quarter before the Tigers started off the final 10 minutes with a 3-pointer to make it an eight-point margin that Denison could never recover from.
Wynn led the Big Red with 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field while adding seven rebounds, five steals and two blocks for another staff-stuffing performance. Carpenter was one point shy of a double-double as she finished with nine points on 3-for-3 shooting and added 11 rebounds, and Contreras had seven points and seven rebounds.
Denison is now 6-9 overall and 4-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Wittenberg improved to 9-6 and 3-3 and drew into a tie for fourth place with the Big Red in the NCAC standings in terms of conference winning percentage.
With only one game left in the month of January for the Big Red, Denison will play at Ohio Wesleyan University at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26, before having a week until another road game at the College of Wooster on February 2.
