Box Score 1 DELAWARE, Ohio – Despite sending the game to extra innings, Denison softball suffered an 8-7 loss in 11 innings to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Margaret Sagan Field in Delaware. Game two of the doubleheader was forced to a no contest after the game was rained out in the third inning.
- The Big Red took the first lead of the game in the top of the second when sophomore Abby Arabia drove home Noelle Chovanec and Clara Wolff with a two-run double to left to give Denison an early advantage, 2-0.
- The Bishops added four runs over the next four innings of play, taking a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning. With the Big Red down to their final out, senior Gabi Dufresne reached on an error by OWU's center fielder Aimee Duckworth, allowing Dufresne to head to third base and score Allie Kovatch and Claire Powell in the process, forcing the game to head to extra innings tied at 4-4.
- In the top of the 10th, Dufresne cashed in once again for DU when she drove home Powell on a sacrifice fly to right, giving the Big Red a 5-4 lead. However, the Bishops responded in the home half of the 10th when an RBI single from Rylee Anspach kept the game going tied at 5-5.
- The Big Red added two more runs in the top of the 11th when a fielder's choice from Chovanec scored Sam Kline from third and a sacrifice fly from Maggie Ballentine scored Jessica Hopkins to put DU in front, 7-5. Despite the Big Red lead, the Bishops followed with a run scored on a throwing error that led to a game-tying RBI single from Alyssa Back. The Bishops closed out their comeback when Duckworth scored Back with a sacrifice fly to right and ended the extra-innings marathon. The loss sent Denison to 6-13 overall while the win moved OWU to 6-4 on the season.
- Kline and Caitlin Ellwanger led the Big Red with two hits each. Arabia tallied a team-best two runs batted in and Powell led the team with two runs scored.
- Saturday's game was the most innings the Big Red had played in one contest since May 5, 2018 when Denison outlasted Wittenberg, 5-4, in 13 innings in the NCAC Tournament.
The Big Red will return to action next Thursday, April 22 when they welcome DePauw University to Granville for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. Game two is set to follow at approximately 5:30 p.m.
