Men's Swimming & Diving Invitational Updates

Denison will host a three-day, four-session invitational meet against Ohio Wesleyan from March 5-7 at the Trumbull Aquatics Center. Recaps from each day will be posted here along with live event coverage links. Spectators at this event are prohibited.

Friday Results

Denison men's swimming & diving completed the first of four sessions on Friday night by winning all six events to take an 87-12 lead over visiting Ohio Wesleyan University.

Sam Myaard led DU in the 500 freestyle by dropping 4.04 seconds off his previous season best as he posted a winning time of 4:25.35. Ryan Foreback was second in 4:30.73.

Trey Ike won the 50 free in 20.31 as he chopped .31 seconds off his previous season-best. Liam Picozzi (20.39) and Michael Arapasi (20.52) took second and third place. In the 200 individual medley Eric Chimes took first with a time of 1:49.00 he edged out teammate John Stauffer who touched in 1:49.45.

The 400 medley relay team of Picozzi, Kurlich, Ethan Smith and Ike prevailed with a time of 3:16.38. The 3-meter dive saw Liam Simmons post a new 11-dive PR at 546.83. Simmons' individual dive high score was a 67.20 on this ninth dive, a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck.

The night was started with a victory in the 200 free relay as Smith, Kurlich, Noah Houskeeper and Nick Czepukaitis won in 1:22.03.

Denison continued its weekend meet with Ohio Wesleyan with two more sessions on Saturday at the Trumbull Aquatics Center. After the completion of all 20 traditional NCAA championship events Denison led the Battling Bishops 318-43.

Several long-standing varsity records came dangerously close to falling on Saturday. In the 200 free, 2019 NCAA national champion Drake Horton posted a time of 1:37.89 to win the event. David Curtis has held that varsity record (1:37.20) since 2009.

First-year Ethan Smith put Denison Hall of Famer Aaron Cole on notice with his performance in the 100 fly. The rookie touched with a winning time of 47.56. Cole has owned the varsity record at 47.43 since 2000.

In the 400 IM, senior John Stauffer recorded a personal best time of 3:52.00 to win the grueling event.  Stauffer was the 2019 North Coast Athletic Conference champion in the event.

Liam Picozzi swept the backstroke events with a 48.26 in the 100 back and a time of 1:45.92 in the 200.  Sam Myaard won the 1,650 free in 15:27.84 while also taking second in the 200 free (1:39.64).  Noah Houskeeper (55.02) held off Richie Kurlich (55.43) in the 100 breast but Kurlich returned to win the 200 breast in 2:00.00.
Smith returned on Saturday night to win the 200 fly with a time of 1:46.56 while Stauffer checked in second at 1:47.53. In the 100 free, Trey Ike won in 44.58 while Nick Czepukaitis followed at 45.46.

The 11-dive one-meter competition saw Liam Simmons total a personal best score of 494.95. His highest scoring dive came on his 10th attempt, an inward 2 somersault tuck that he landed for 58.80 points.  Simmons was followed in second place by teammate Cam Friedauer at 331.90.  In the night session, the duo competed in a six-dive 3-meter contest that saw Simmons win with a score of 303.70.

Two relays took place in the morning session. In the 200 medley relay, Picozzi, Kurlich, Smith, and Ike won with a time of 1:28.52. The 800 free relay that was comprised of Eric Chimes, Myaard, Patrick Madden, and Horton touched in 6:40.90.

The meet was closed out by Picozzi, Ike, Czepukaitis, and Horton with a 2:57.72 in the 400 free relay.

Session #4 Results

The Denison men's swimming & diving team completed the three-day meet against Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday. The Big Red prevailed 411-56 over the course 26 events.

Sam Myaard continued his impressive meet by setting a new Trumbull Aquatics Center record in the 1,000 freestyle.  Myaard won four events and posted one second-place finish on the weekend. His time of 9:12.75 bumped previous pool record holder Matthew Hedman from the top spot.

Liam Picozzi opened the session with a victory in the 50 backstroke in 22.57. Trey Ike took second in 22.82 and then returned to post a new PR at 20.22 in the 50 free time trial. On Friday, Ike won the 50 free with a time of 20.31.

Richie Kurlich won the 50 breaststroke in 26.06 and Noah Houskeeper logged a new varsity record in the 100 IM with a time of 49.78. Bebe Wang had held that record since 2017.

On the 1-meter board, Liam Simmons won with a six-dive score of 293.35. Cam Friedauer was second at 222.40.
