Baseball opens 2021 with DH sweep of CWRU

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Highlighted by a walk-off win in the second game of the day, No. 16 Denison baseball kicked off their 2021 season on Saturday afternoon with a pair of victories, 9-0 and 6-5, over Case Western Reserve at Big Red Field in Granville.

  • Denison's fireworks were capped off in game two of the series after the Spartans fought back with two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 5-5, forcing the Big Red bats back to the plate in the home half of the inning. After Max Lahn roped a single to right and loaded the bases with one out, junior Danny Alvarez sent a grounder to CWRU's shortstop, but the throw to the plate was not in time as Will Krushena scored the winning run and sent the Big Red to 2-0 on the season.

  • In the opening game of the day, senior pitcher Taylor Perrett and DU's dynamic offense stole the show in a 9-0 shutout of Case Western Reserve. Perrett worked seven strong innings with six strikeouts and only three hits allowed. Denison's offense backed up the senior right hander with nine runs on 16 hits, including a quartet of three-hit performances from Daniel Spencer, Lahn, Krushena, and Brian McAuliffe. They also combined for seven RBI and seven runs scored.

  • Spencer, McAuliffe, and Lahn each finished the day 5-for-9 and combined for eight runs batted in, six runs scored, and four doubles. Krushena tallied four hits on the day with five runs and two RBI.

Denison will return to action on Sunday, March 21 when they play two more with Case Western Reserve, this time in Cleveland, Ohio with the doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. CWRU is currently not allowing spectators to their athletic events, but they will be offering a live video stream of the doubleheader.
