GRANVILLE, Ohio – Thanks to a season-high 26 steals and adding 27 points off turnovers, Denison women's basketball earned their second-straight win in as many days over the College of Wooster as the Big Red defeated the Scots 57-46 on Saturday afternoon at Livingston Gymnasium in Granville.
With Denison leading 14-13 after the first quarter of play, the Big Red began to heat up in the second when freshman
Cara Harty connected from long range to give DU a 20-17 lead. Following two of Denison's seven steals in the quarter, sophomore
Ann Rafeedie added to the lead with another shot from behind the arc and a three from
Hannah Wynn made it a 26-17 advantage for the Big Red with less than five minutes to play in the half.
A pair of late buckets for the Scots cut Denison's lead to 28-26 with 1:08 to play in the frame, but with 31 seconds to go, sophomore
Mikaila Carpenter finished a layup in the paint, giving the Big Red a 30-26 lead entering the break.
The Big Red continued to pull away in the third when Denison turned 10 Wooster turnovers into 10 steals for DU and outscored the Scots 10-4 off turnovers in the quarter. The Big Red built their lead to as many as 10 in the frame, 38-28, thanks to six-straight low post points from Carpenter and
Isa Contreras. Senior
Zyah Beal secured four of her career-high eight steals in the third and Wynn turned in four late-quarter points to help DU take a 46-39 lead into the fourth.
With 4:09 remaining in the game, the Scots trimmed Denison's lead to eight, 50-42, after Wooster's Krista English connected on a three-pointer from the perimeter. Despite Wooster's late comeback attempt, a layup from Beal and four combined points from
Gabby Elliott helped the Big Red close out the Scots in the final minutes for their second-straight win of the weekend.
Denison's 26 steals finished one shy of the program-record 27 that took place against Kenyon College back on Dec. 5, 1992. Beal's game-high eight swipes also added her to a group of six former players to complete the same milestone. The program record currently sits at 10 and was accomplished by Christi Clay against Oberlin on Dec. 4, 1991.
Carpenter led the Big Red in scoring with 12 points while adding nine rebounds and three steals. Elliott followed with nine points and five boards while Beal matched her eight steals with eight points and chipped in five assists and three rebounds. Wynn rounded out DU's leading scorers with seven points, three boards, and two steals.
Wooster's Maria Janasko posted a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jenna Stanton added 11 points and Alyssa Chritz totaled nine points and eight rebounds.
The Big Red will take the next week off before traveling to Springfield, Ohio on Friday, March 5 for a 6 p.m. tip-off with the Tigers of Wittenberg.
