GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Denison shot 66 percent in the second half and outscored the Tigers 50-32 to hand No. 14 DePauw its first loss of the season, 84-66 on Thursday night at Livingston Gymnasium.
After some early season struggles on the offensive end, Denison broke out of its sump with a dominate performance on both sides of the ball. The Big Red guard combo of
Kevin Cheng and
Darren Rubin combined for 28 points while
Conor Fenton and
Freeman Brou were equally dominate in the paint.
Denison outscored DePauw 48-20 in the pain where the Big Red were alarmingly efficient, going 24-for-33 (73%) down low. Denison was so good, when they did get into the lane, the defense collapsed, and the slashers were able to find open shooters. DU was 9-for-24 from beyond the arc, led by Rubin and Cheng who were each 3-for-4.
Fenton led all scorers with 18 points and 12 rebounds while also chipping in three steals. Brou scored 14 points to go along with six assists, four rebounds and two blocked shots. Cheng tallied 15 points in 20 minutes off the bench while Rubin finished with a career-high 13 points and four assists in 29 minutes.
Denison's efficiency was critical to its success but their work on the glass didn't hurt. Denison held a 32-24 rebounding advantage and the 10 offensive rebounds allowed the home team to outscore DePauw 18-3 on second chance points.
DePauw also had four players score in double figures, led by Josh Hall's 17 points and eight rebounds.
The loss drops DePauw to 7-1 while Denison improves to 3-1. The two teams will meet again this Saturday, Feb. 20 in Greencastle, Indiana. DePauw University will offer a live video stream beginning at 4 p.m.
