Second half surge pushes Denison past OWU

GRANVILLE, Ohio--  Denison outscored Ohio Wesleyan 42-23 in the second half and rallied from an 18-point deficit to stun the Battling Bishops, 63-57 at Livingston Gymnasium.

The Big Red trailed OWU 34-21 at halftime after shooting 29 percent from the field in the opening stanza.  Ohio Wesleyan's lead grew to 18 after Grant Spicer's 3-pointer one minute into the second half.  Denison responded with an 8-0 run fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers from Freeman Brou and Ben Stern.

Trailing by six with six minutes to play, Spencer Patenaude scored in the paint to trim the OWU lead to 53-49. A missed 3-pointer by Jack Clement at the other end resulted in a rebound for Conor Fenton and a triple by Denison's Kevin Cheng making it a 53-52 score with 5:11 to play.

DU still trailed by one with two minutes remaining until Spicer's layup on a pass from Zane Ries put the Bishops on top by three.

On Denison's next possession Fenton drove to the hoop and dished to Brou who knocked down 3-pointer to tie the game at 57-57.  A miss by the Bishops gave the ball back to the Big Red and first-year Zach White made the biggest shot of his young career when he dribbled into space and nailed a leaner just outside of the paint to give his team its first lead of the game.

After a timeout by Ohio Wesleyan the two teams turned the ball over on consecutive possessions.  Ohio Wesleyan had the ball with 16 seconds on the clock.  Clement's 3-pointer was off the mark but Spicer was there for the rebound. His put-back was blocked by Kevin Cheng and he quickly got the ball to White who was fouled in transition.  White knocked down two free throws to put DU up 61-57 with 11 seconds to play to lock up the win.

Patenaude finished with 14 points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench to lead Denison.  Cheng followed with 12 points while Brou and White both ended with nine points apiece.  Fenton led the way with 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Ohio Wesleyan was led by Clement's 17 points. Spicer chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds.

Denison shot 35 percent from the field compared to 42 percent for the Battling Bishops.  The Big Red held a 38-28 advantage on the glass and both teams committed 11 turnovers. The Denison bench also outscored Ohio Wesleyan, 41-15.

Denison's next game will be Thursday, February 18 at 6 p.m. when they host DePauw University.  No spectators are permitted at Livingston Gymnasium this season. The Denison Sports Network will provide a live video broadcast beginning at 5:50 p.m.
