GRANVILLE, Ohio (December 8, 2021) – The Denison University women's basketball team concluded its stretch of three straight North Coast Athletic Conference games at home with a 60-52 victory over Hiram College on Wednesday night inside Livingston Gymnasium.
It was a rough shooting night as both teams shot under 32 percent from the field and under 17 percent from three in the first half. The two teams then picked it up a little bit in the second half, but both teams still finished at 35 percent or below shooting for the game and below 24 percent from 3-point range.
After closing the final two minutes of the first half on a 7-0 run to lead it by eight points up 26-18, Denison went up by 12 for the first time in the game at 34-22 following a 6-0 run with six minutes left in the third quarter.
Then, a 3-pointer by
Gabby Elliott in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter made it a 14-point Big Red lead at 43-29.
Hiram got back to within seven points of the lead at 49-42 with three and a half minutes left to play, but another 3-pointer by Elliott made it a 10-point game again, and then a layup by Elliott made it 54-42 with under three minutes remaining.
A pair of 3-pointers by Hiram helped the Terriers battle back to within eight at 56-48 with only a minute left, and then a layup by Hiram made it only a six-point margin at 56-50 with only 34 seconds left.
Hannah Wynn added a free throw to make it a three-possession game before Hiram got it down to five at 57-52 with 21 seconds left. Wynn again added a free throw, and then
Maddie Goodman got the offensive rebound on the second shot, sending Elliott to the line to make it a three-possession game with only five seconds left.
Denison was led by Elliott with 16 points on three 3-pointers, along with
Mikaila Carpenter with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and second in three games. Carpenter was 5-for-9 from the field, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Wynn added 10 points while also contributing with five rebounds and four assists. Goodman finished with six points and seven rebounds while
Isa Contreras had a career-high 10 boards,
Ava Warcaba had six points, and
Amy Barry had five points and four assists.
Denison improved to 3-6 overall and 2-1 in the NCAC with what was its seventh straight win over Hiram dating back to the 2017-18 season. The Terriers, meanwhile, dropped to 3-7 and 0-3 on the young season.
Next up, the Big Red will play a conference game on the road for the first time in 2021-22 as they head to Kenyon College for a 1 pm. tipoff on Saturday, December 11. It will be Denison's final conference game of the 2021 Fall semester.
