Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s basketball wins first road NCAC game

GAMBIER, Ohio (December 11, 2021) – After winning two of its first three North Coast Athletic Conference games of the season all at home, the Denison University women's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season in NCAC play and came away with a 66-59 victory over Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon.

The story of the game through the first three quarters was 3-point shooting and offensive rebounding as Denison connected on five 3-pointers in the first quarter and added four in the third quarter, and led the game by 17 points (54-37) entering the fourth quarter.

In the final period, however, Kenyon outscored Denison by 10 at 22-12 and came back to within five points in the final minute.

Denison's only basket of the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter came via the fourth 3-pointer of the game by Maddie Goodman to make it 57-39 with eight and a half minutes left to play.

From there, Kenyon cut its deficit down to six points at 57-51 following a 12-0 run ending with 2:49 on the clock. In all, it was a 14-3 start to the fourth quarter for the Ladies.

With 1:54 to go in the game, a short jumper by Mikaila Carpenter finally stopped the seven-and-a-half-minute Denison scoring drought, but Kenyon answered right back with its third 3-pointer of the quarter to get to within five at 59-54 with a minute and a half left to play.

Fortunately for Denison, a moving screen by Kenyon with 47 seconds left gave the Big Red the ball with a two-possession lead, and after three international fouls by the Lords, point guard Hannah Wynn went to the free throw line with 31 seconds left and hit both of her attempts to make it a three-possession game (61-54).

After a quick layup by Kenyon to extend the game, Goodman was sent to the free throw line with 23 seconds left, and just like Wynn, she sank both shots to make it 63-56.

On the ensuing inbounds by Kenyon trying to roll the ball up the court to preserve the clock, Wynn wisely jumped on the loose ball to get the steal and essentially seal the game. Wynn hit three more free throws in the final 21 seconds to secure the win.

Despite Denison shooting only 2-for-7 (28.6 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter with seven turnovers compared to 52.9 percent (9-17) shooting from the field and 57.1 percent (4-for-7) shooting from three for Kenyon over the final 10 minutes, the Big Red never trailed in the game.

Denison finished the game with 11 made 3-pointers and outrebounded Kenyon 44-28 overall and 13-6 on the offensive glass, leading to a 19-7 advantage in second chance points.

The Big Red were also 7-for-8 from the free throw line during the fourth quarter and finished the game 9-for-10 from the stripe.

Four different Big Red players hit at least two 3-pointers, led by Goodman on 4-for-8 shooting from three for 16 points.

Wynn was 2-for-3 from three and had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists; and Isa Contreras also hit two threes and scored 12 points while setting a new career-high in rebounds for the second game in a row with 11.

Francesca Sileo added three 3-pointers and scored nine points, Carpenter scored 10 points and had eight rebounds, and Amy Barry added nine boards and four assists.

Denison improved to 4-6 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC while also earning its first road win of the season. Kenyon, meanwhile, fell to 3-7 and 1-3 after previously winning three of its last four games.

It was a hot start to the game for Denison, which connected on four 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the game. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Goodman and Contreras opened the scoring, another 3-pointer by Goodman made it 9-2, and then a three by Sileo to make it 12-4.

With under two minutes to go in the first quarter, Goodman hit her third 3-pointer and Denison's fifth 3-pointer of the period to make it 17-6, and then Ava Warcaba added a layup to give the Big Red their largest lead of the quarter up by 13 points (19-6).

After a 6-0 run for Kenyon between the end of the first quarter and the start of the second, Sileo connected on her second 3-pointer of the game a minute and a half into the second quarter to make it 22-12, and then Contreras added a jumper on the fourth assist of the first half by Wynn to make it 24-12.

Like she did in the first quarter, a layup by Warcaba gave Denison its largest lead of the second quarter up by 14 points at 28-14 with four and a half minutes left in the period.

Three minutes into the third quarter, Sileo inbounded the ball from the baseline and got it back in the corner, where she somehow banked in her third three of the game to make it 37-25 Big Red.

The 3-pointers just kept coming for the Big Red as Contreras hit her second three of the game with the shot clock winding down to make it 52-35 with under three minutes left in the third quarter.

Denison's largest lead of the game came after Goodman gathered an offensive rebound and scored it to make it a 19-point margin at 54-35 with a minute left in the third quarter.

Next up, Denison will return to its home court and take a break from NCAC action to host Franciscan University at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, inside Livingston Gymnasium. Then after Christmas Break, the Big Red will head South to the Basketball Destinations Post-Christmas Classic in Nashville, Tennessee (Dec. 29-30).
