GRANVILLE, Ohio (December 14, 2021) – In what was the first ever game between the two teams, the Denison University women's basketball team defeated Franciscan University 59-47 in nonconference action to earn its third win in a row and fourth win in five games on Tuesday night inside Livingston Gymnasium.

After holding Franciscan (0-9 overall) to only two field goals and six points in the second quarter, Denison (5-6) took a six-point lead (25-19) into the third quarter, and then opened the period on a 12-2 run to take its largest lead of the game up by 16 points at 37-21.

The Barons closed the final 5:41 of the third quarter on a 14-3 run to get back to within five points at 40-35 entering the fourth quarter.

Then, a layup by Franciscan to open the fourth quarter made it only a three-point game at 40-37, but an and-one by Mikaila Carpenter followed by a layup by Carpenter started a 12-2 Big Red run to make it a 13-point margin at 52-39 after a layup by Ava Warcaba with 5:35 left to play.

The closest the Barons would get the rest of the way was to within eight points at 55-47 with just over a minute remaining.

Denison was paced by Maddie Goodman with 11 points, Carpenter with 10 points, Cara Harty with nine points, Gabby Elliott with eight points and Isa Contreras with seven points. Hannah Wynn added eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals while Amy Barry had seven rebounds.

Additionally, three free throws by Jill Smith in the final minute and a half of the game were good for the first three points of her Big Red career.
