GRANVILLE, Ohio (December 8, 2021) – The Denison University men's basketball team defeated Hiram College by 25 points, 82-57, at home to earn its third win in a row and fourth win in the last five games on Wednesday night inside Livingston Gymnasium.
Denison shot 57.58 percent (19-33) from the field and 40 percent (4-10) from three in the first half while building a lead as high as 15 points at 36-21 with 3:15 left before halftime. The 15-point margin came courtesy of a 3-pointer by
Scotty Dean and capped a 13-0 Big Red run featuring three 3-pointers by three different players.
After leading by eight points at halftime (42-34) on a layup by
Darren Rubin in the final 15 seconds, Denison turned on the defense in the second half and limited the Terriers to only 29.03 percent (9-31) shooting from the field for only 23 points.
A 16-0 Big Red run featuring three more 3-pointers again by three different players made it a 26-point spread at 67-41 with 10 and a half minutes left.
Rubin and
Freeman Brou both scored 17 points for the Big Red while Brou also added a season-high 10 rebounds for his second career double-double. Brou was 8-for-13 from the field while Rubin was 7-for-13 with three 3-pointers.
Kevin Cheng added 10 points on two 3-pointers while
Will Hunter added nine points and
Tyler Miller and Dean both had six.
Denison improved to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Hiram suffered its fifth loss in a row and fell to 2-6 and 0-3.
The Big Red will now take a break from conference action until the beginning of the New Year in January 2022. To finish off the month of December, Denison will play at Carnegie Mellon University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 11, and then will return to its home court after Christmas Break to host Earlham College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29.
