PITTSBURGH, Pa. (December 11, 2021) – In what was the first matchup between the two teams since the 1993-94 season, the Denison University men's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped as the Big Red came up short by a final score of 77-58 at Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday afternoon.
Will Hunter led Denison (4-6 overall) with 13 points while
John Faller added seven;
Ricky Radtke,
Darren Rubin and
Cameron Smith each had six; and
Scotty Dean,
Freeman Brou and
Emmett Burnside each had five. Radtke and Brou also both led the Big Red in rebounds with seven.
It was a 12-0 lead to the game for Carnegie Mellon (5-2 overall) before Denison's first basket by Brou over four and a half minutes in. The Big Red turned the ball over five times before their first basket and had more turnovers than shots (3) before their first make.
Denison got back to within single digits at 16-8 after a layup by Radtke with 11:20 left in the first half, and then a 3-pointer by Rubin made it only a six-point game at 17-11.
A layup by Brou made it an eight-point game again at 21-13 with 9:18 to go before halftime, but that was the closest the Big Red would get for the rest of the game as an 11-2 Tartans' run made it a 17-point margin at 32-15 with 5:48 left in the period.
Denison shot only 27.27 percent (9-for-33) from the field and was only 2-for-9 from three and 2-for-10 from the free throw line in the first half while falling behind by 17 at halftime at 39-22.
The Big Red will not return to action until after Christmas break when they host Earlham College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29. It will be Denison's final game of 2021.
