GRANVILLE, Ohio (December 4, 2021) – A layup by
Mikaila Carpenter on a sideline out-of-bounds play sent the game into overtime, but unfortunately the Denison University women's basketball team was outscored 12-5 in the extra period and come up short by a final score of 74-67 against Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday inside Livingston Gymnasium.
Denison (2-6 overall, 1-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and then trailed by 14 points (46-32) with seven minutes left in the third quarter before rattling off 10 straight points to make it 46-42 with 2:42 left in the period.
Trailing by six (52-46) with six and a half minutes left to play, a 3-pointer by
Maddie Goodman began an 8-0 run to give Denison the lead for the first time since it was 10-9 back in the first quarter.
After the three by Goodman, an and-one by Carpenter tied the game up at 52-52 with five and a half minutes left, and then with 4:42 left, Carpenter gave the Big Red the lead up 54-52 with an offensive rebound and ensuing layup.
Another offensive rebound and layup by Carpenter made it 56-54 with 3:12 remaining, and then an offensive rebound and layup by
Isa Contreras made it 58-56 with 1:37 on the clock.
However, Ohio Wesleyan (5-2, 1-0) responded with a pair of free throws followed by a layup after an offensive rebound of its own to retake the lead at 60-58, and had the ball with only 19 seconds left up by two.
From there, the Big Red defense dug down deep and forced a backcourt violation with 16 seconds left, and then after a miss by the Denison offense, yet another offensive rebound and layup by Carpenter tied the game at 60-60 with only three seconds left in regulation.
The Battling Bishops answered with a layup with 0.7 seconds left, but that was enough time for Carpenter to catch the pass on the proceeding inbounds play from the sideline and finish with a layup that seemingly touched nearly every part of the rim before dropping through the bottom of the basket.
Carpenter then opened up the overtime period with two free throws to make it 64-62 Denison, but unfortunately, four straight turnovers by the Big Red allowed OWU to go up by four at 68-64 with 2:08 left in the extra period.
Goodman hit a 3-pointer to make it only a one-point game at 68-67 with 1:57 to go, but the Big Red missed each of their next three shots, all of which were 3-pointers, while the Bishops held on for the win.
