No. 4 men’s swimming & diving wins third straight Denison Invitational title

GRANVILLE, Ohio (December 4, 2021) – The No. 4 Denison University men's swimming & diving team once again walked away from the Denison Invitational with the team championship, making it three straight such titles for the Big Red since the first Denison Invitational in 2018. Denison totaled 2,425.5 points to the win event by 395 points over No. 3 Emory University in second place with 2,057.5 points. Third place went to No. 6 Washington University-St. Louis with 1,484 points while fourth place belonged to No. 11 Franklin & Marshall College with 705 points.

The Big Red racked up 22 more NCAA Division III National "B" cut time during the finals on Saturday to go along with six more event titles. Denison won each of the first four event finals of day 3 on Saturday and six of the seven in total.

On the 1-meter dive, Liam Simmons earned first place with a National "B' cut of 461.95 points.

Lucas Conrads won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:29.57, and was followed by Lukas Gately (15:34.73) in second place, Luke Landis (15:35.77) in fourth, Sam Myaard (15:44.53) in seventh, Tyler Distenfeld (15:47.92) in ninth, Ryan Foreback (15:49.79) in 10th and Christian McIntire (15:54.27) in 11th. All seven times were good for a National "B" cut.

Liam Picozzi won the 200 backstroke with a National "B" cut time of 1:45.97.

Trey Ike won the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.25 seconds while Kyle Verstandig was third with a time of 44.41 seconds. Both times were good for a National "B" cut as well.

Denison put together four National "B" cuts in the 200 breaststroke as Gavin Jones (2:01.24) was third, Elijah Venos (2:03.57) was ninth, Christian Narcelles (2:04.20) was second in the B finals and 11th overall, and Aidan Lane was 13th overall (2:04.53).

Then, in the final individual swimming event of the entire invitational, the 200 fly, Richie Kurlich won first place with a time of 1:46.96, and was followed by Eric Chimes (1:48.51) in third, Noah Houskeeper (1:49.49) in seventh, Max Soja (1:49.48) first in the B finals and 10th overall, and Ethan Bevill (1:50.20) second in the B finals and 11th overall, making it five more National "B" cuts.

The Big Red capped off the three-day invitational with a new varsity record in the 400 freestyle relay as Picozzi, Ike, Patrick Daly and Verstandig touched in 2:56.45 to capture first place. The Denison "B" team of Michael Arpasi, Chase Fisher, Chris Luus and Nicholas Czepukaitis finished in fourth with a time of 3:02.10. Yet again, both times were good for National "B" cuts.

In all, Denison accumulated 88 NCAA Division III National "B" cuts by 24 individuals and nine relay groups throughout the meet.
