CLEVELAND, Ohio (November 27, 2021) – The final game before the start of North Coast Athletic Conference action for the Denison University women's basketball team was its second meeting this season against Case Western Reserve University. However, after earning their first win of the season against Case last weekend, the Big Red came up short by a final score of 93-69 against the Spartans this time around.
Maddie Goodman led the Big Red with 14 points and was followed by
Isa Contreras and
Mikaila Carpenter both with 13 points. Carpenter also added a game-high eight rebounds while
Hannah Wynn led the Big Red in assists with six.
The two teams went back-and-forth early on with eight lead changes in the first six minutes of the game. Denison led 10-9 on a deep 2-point jumper by
Ava Warcaba with 5:14 left in the first quarter, but from there, Case hit three 3-pointers to start a 12-3 run, which ultimately gave the Spartans a 21-13 lead with 1:41 left in the period.
A jumper in the waning moments of the first quarter by Contreras made it a six-point game at 23-17; and then after going 0-for-4 as a team from three in the first quarter, Denison started the second quarter with a steal and a three from Contreras to make it 23-20. Less than two minutes later, a 3-pointer by
Gabby Elliott made it 27-23.
With six minutes to go until halftime,
Francesca Sileo hit a 3-pointer to make it only a one-point game at 29-28; and then halfway through the period,
Ann Rafeedie connected from long range to tie the game at 31-31, making it four 3-pointers from four different players for Denison in the second quarter.
With 2:29 left in the first half, an and-one by Carpenter tied the game again at 36-36, but unfortunately, Case closed the final 1:21 of the first half on a 7-1 run to again take a six-point lead at the end of the quarter up 43-37.
Three minutes into the third quarter, the second 3-pointer of the game by Sileo made it only a one-point game at 48-47 before the Spartans answered with a three of their own two possessions later and proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to take the first double-digit lead of the game at 58-47 with three and a half minutes left in the period.
In all, Case finished off the last seven minutes of the third quarter on a 17-4 run to lead it by 14 (65-51) going into the final 10 minutes. Denison, meanwhile, was only 1-for-10 from the field with three turnovers in the final seven minutes of the third quarter.
In the end, Denison only turned it over 13 times, but trailed Case 17-5 on points off turnovers.
Just like it did last time out against No. 8 John Carroll University, Denison allowed Case to score 20 points or more in all four quarters as the Big Red fell to 1-5 on the season and Case improved to 3-5.
NCAC play will start at home for the Big Red on Wednesday, December 1, as Denison welcomes the College of Wooster into Livingston Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. for what will also be the first home game of the 2021-22 season for Denison.
