WASHINGTON, Pa. (November 20, 2021) – The Denison University women's basketball team scored 11 straight points late in the fourth quarter to come from behind and earn its first win of the 2021-22 season 79-74 over Case Western Reserve University in the consolation game of the Springhill Suites Tip-off Tournament.
Freshman
Maddie Goodman continued her great weekend by pouring in a career-high 26 points on 11-for-18 shooting (61.1 percent) from the field and 50 percent (4-8) shooting from three. Goodman also added a new career-best seven rebounds on Saturday and averaged 20.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and three assists over two games on the weekend and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Sophomore
Francesca Sileo scored a new career-high 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field and two 3-pointers while junior
Mikaila Carpenter notched her first double-double of the season with 12 points also on 5-for-10 shooting to go along with a new career-best 15 rebounds.
Isa Contreras had the best game of her senior season so far with eight points, and junior
Hannah Wynn had a great all-around game with seven points, seven rebounds and a new career-high eight assists.
Trailing 69-60 with five and a half minutes left to play, Denison (1-3 overall) began its comeback.
With under three minutes remaining in the game, a layup by Sileo made it a 9-2 Denison run to trim the nine-point deficit down to two and 71-69; and then with only two minutes left, a layup by Carpenter over her defender tied the game at 71-71.
A short jumper by Goodman on an offensive rebound and assist by Carpenter put Denison ahead 73-71 for the first time in the fourth quarter with 1:12 left to play; and then with only 36 seconds to go, another basket by Goodman made it 75-71 to cap a 15-2 run featuring 11 consecutive points for the Big Red. Nine of the 15 points during the run were accounted for by Goodman.
Then, a 3-pointer by Case (2-4) made it only a one-point game with 18 seconds left. Fortunately, Wynn stepped up to the free throw line with 13 seconds left and sank both of her attempts to make it a three-point game at 77-74.
After a miss from three by the Spartans with 10 seconds left, Sileo got the defensive rebound and made both of her free throws to seal the win.
Denison shot 8-for-13 (61.54 percent) from the field in the fourth quarter and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line while holding the Spartans to 5-for-20 (25.00 percent) shooting over the final 10 minutes.
Earlier in the game, Goodman hit her second 3-pointer halfway through the second quarter to added to an 8-0 Big Red run featuring five straight points by Goodman to put Denison up by six at 31-25. About 45 seconds later, an offensive rebound and assist by Goodman led to a layup by
Abigail Westmeyer to make it a 10-0 run to put Denison up 33-25.
Then, a layup by Contreras in the final minute of the first half sent the Big Red into the locker room up by eight points at 39-31. However, Case proceeded to go on a 10-0 run in the third quarter to take a 52-48 lead and outscored Denison 31-16 to take a 61-55 advantage into the final quarter, which would set up the comeback win for the Big Red.
Next up, Denison plays at No. 8 nationally-ranked John Carroll University at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 23. Then after the Thanksgiving holiday, Denison will have a rematch against Case Western Reserve on Saturday, November 27, in Cleveland, Ohio.
