WASHINGTON, Pa. (November 19, 2021) – Led by 15 points on four 3-pointers by
Maddie Goodman, the Denison University women's basketball team battled to within six points of the Presidents twice in the fourth quarter before ultimately falling by a final score of 58-46 against Washington and Jefferson College during day one of the Springhill Suites Tip-off Tournament.
It was a sloppy first quarter as the two teams combined for more turnovers (9) than made field goals (6), and both teams shot 25 percent or below both from the field and from 3-point range.
However, the second quarter was even rougher for the Big Red as they turned the ball over on three of their first four possessions and seven times overall while watching W&J build a 16-point lead up 30-14 with two minutes to go until halftime.
The Presidents shot over 50 percent (9-16) from the field in the second quarter while the Big Red were a combined 7-for-38 (18.4 percent) from the field in the first half.
Denison, however, looked to turn it around in the second half as a little over four minutes into the third quarter, a 3-pointer by
Gabby Elliott assisted by
Hannah Wynn made it a 10-point game at 32-22, and then a layup by
Abigail Westmeyer halfway through the quarter made it 32-24.
With a minute and half left in the third quarter, Goodman hit her third 3-pointer of the game to that point to get Denison to within single digits again at 38-29, and then Goodman started the fourth quarter with yet another 3-pointer to make it only a six-point game at 38-32.
Unfortunately, W&J seemed to have an answer for nearly every time Denison got its deficit back down to single digits.
With seven and a half minutes to go in the game, another 3-pointer by the Big Red, this time by
Francesca Sileo, again made it a six-point game at 42-36, and then Sileo hit another three, this time with just under three minutes to go to make it a seven-point game at 50-43.
In the final minute, Wynn hit a 3-pointer to again get Denison back to within single digits at 54-46.
The Big Red finished the fourth quarter shooting 4-for-8 from three, but it was not enough to come all the way back as W&J again shot 50 percent from the field.
Goodman finished shooting 5-for-10 from the field and 4-for-7 from three while Sileo finished with 10 points after shooting 50 percent both from the field (4-8) and from three (2-4).
Westmeyer finished with a game-high 12 rebounds while
Mikaila Carpenter added eight and Wynn and Goodman both had six.
Now, the Big Red will battle against Case Western Reserve University in the consolation game of the Springhill Suites Tip-off Tournament at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 20.
