ANGOLA, Ind. (November 14, 2021) – The Denison University women's basketball team played with the team ranked third in the D3hoops.com Women's Basketball Top 25 Preseason Poll, Trine University, in the first half, but after a 14-0 run to start the second half for the Thunder, the Big Red lost by a final score of 88-42 in the final game of the Cameron Hospital Classic.
Denison (0-2 overall) scored first two minutes into the game on a second chance lay-in by
Maddie Goodman, and the Big Red defense kept Trine (2-0) off the scoreboard until a buzzer-beating midrange jumper four minutes in.
Ava Warcaba answered with a score on the assist from
Amy Barry on the next possession to put Denison right back ahead. However, the Thunder went on a 7-0 run before another second chance layup by the Big Red, this time by
Hannah Wynn with three minutes left in the opening quarter to make the score 9-6.
Denison ended the first quarter with a midrange jumper by
Isa Contreras on the assist from Wynn to make the score 11-8.
Both teams shot below 30 percent without a 3-point make in the first quarter as the Big Red were 0-for-8 while the Thunder were 0-for-5 from long range, but then Trine opened up the second quarter with a 3-pointer on the first possession to make it a 14-8 advantage.
Contreras came up with a putback layup to make it 14-10 a minute into the second quarter, the third second-chance bucket to that point by the Big Red, and then
Mikaila Carpenter connected on a nice fadeaway shot followed by another basket by Warcaba to tie the game up at 14-14 with 7:42 left before halftime.
With six minutes left in the period,
Gabby Elliott made a nice spin move into the paint and finished to put Denison ahead 16-14, and then a free throw by Goodman with 4:16 on the clock made it 17-16 before the second 3-pointer of the quarter by Trine.
The first 3-pointer of the game for Denison came from
Francesca Sileo to make the score 24-20 in favor of Trine with 2:39 to go until halftime, and then Sileo scored again to make it 29-22 with 1:41 on the clock.
Unfortunately, it was a 17-5 run for Trine over the final four minutes of the second quarter to make the score 33-22 at halftime. That run then became an even bigger 31-5 run with 14 straight points by Trine to start the third quarter.
Although nobody reached double figures in scoring for the Big Red, Denison had 10 different players enter the scoring column, led by Sileo with eight points and Goodman and Warcaba both with seven. Carpenter pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and Barry added a team-best three assists.
Next up for the Big Red will be another tournament, this one the Springhill Suites Women's Basketball Tip-off Tournament hosted by Washington & Jefferson College. The Big Red and the Presidents will square off at 8 p.m. on the night of Friday, November 19.
