ANGOLA, Ind. (November 13, 2021) – The Denison University women's basketball team found itself ahead 15-6 after the first quarter, but was unable to hold on in its 2021-22 season opener against Albion College in the first game of the Cameron Hospital Classic hosted by Trine University. In the end, the Big Red fell by a final score of 67-45 against the Britons.
It was the season opener for both teams as Denison (0-1 overall) made seven field goals in in the first quarter but was 0-for-8 from three.
After the Big Red limited Albion (1-0) to only 2-for-19 shooting (10.52 percent) overall and 0-7 shooting from three in the first quarter, the Britons shot 50 percent both from the field (6-12) and from three (3-6) while scoring 20 points in the second quarter.
Denison, meanwhile, was only 3-for-15 (20.00 percent) from the field and was 0-for-7 from three in the second quarter, making them 0-15 from three overall at halftime.
Then in the third quarter, it was more of the same as Denison made only one of its 10 field goal attempts and missed both of its 3-pointers while Albion put up the highest-scoring quarter of the game with 21 points.
Denison finished shooting 28.3 percent overall for the game and made only one of its 25 3-point attempts (4.0 percent). Additionally, 18 Big Red turnovers resulted in a 16-5 advantage in points off those turnovers for Albion.
Gabby Elliott and
Mikaila Carpenter both scored 10 points for Denison while Elliott added a team-best four assists and Carpenter and
Hannah Wynn tied for the team-lead with seven rebounds.
The Cameron Hospital Classic will continue for the Big Red as Denison plays the host school, No. 3 Trine University, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 14,
