GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 9, 2021) – After trailing 12-9 in the opening set, the Denison University volleyball team went on a 10-0 run and never trailed again throughout the match as the Big Red swept the College of Wooster 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday during their Senior Day.
It was senior day for
Marija Pavlick,
Dora Vrettos,
Payton McElfresh and
Carly Tenaglia, who were each recognized prior to the start of the match.
Pavlick entered the match on Saturday in the first set and went on to finish with a team-high 11 digs while also adding three assists. She has now tallied 461 digs, 61 assists and 27 service aces in her career.
Vrettos has provided valuable leadership to the volleyball program throughout her career and has appeared in 23 career matches while totaling 61 digs her rookie season.
McElfresh has played in all 18 of Denison's matches so far in 2021, and has amassed 378 kills, 92 assists, 79 service aces, 677 digs and 15.5 blocks throughout her career. She was named NCAC Newcomer of the Year and Second-Team All-NCAC in 2018. On Saturday, McElfresh added one service ace to her career total and reached double figures in digs for the fifth time this season as she finished with 10.
Tenaglia entered Saturday's match in the third set and has tallied 191 digs and 35 kills in her career. Tenaglia, who will graduate in just three years, was recognized at Denison's Top-50 Student-Athlete Celebration in 2021, and was the first recipient of the Dale Googins Health, exercise, and sports studies endowed scholarship.
"The team put together a really consistent performance today," spoke Head Coach
Carter Cassell. "We did a good job of controlling the serve and pass phase of the game. It's always good to get a conference win on Senior Day. We have an exceptional group of seniors who have impacted our program in a tremendous way."
After the first set against Wooster in which Denison hit .367 percent, the Big Red jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the second set on three kills apiece by both junior
Lucy Anderson and freshman
Daria Rodriguez.
The third set started with an assisted block by sophomore
Corinne Boyd and junior
Sidney Gossard as Denison led 8-0 and then led 9-1.
Rodriguez and
Sophia Sobota both finished with 12 kills while Rodriguez hit .308 percent. Anderson finished with 10 kills on an incredible .625 hitting percentage, and
Kirby MacKinnon added 39 assists,
With the win, Denison improved to 13-5 overall and remained undefeated in the North Coast Athletic Conference at 4-0 while Wooster fell to 12-6 and 1-2.
Next up, Denison will play at Kenyon College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13, in NCAC action before two nonconference matches against the University of Mount Union and Capital University on Saturday, October 16, at The Capital Center in Columbus, Ohio.
