Volleyball improves to 5-0 in NCAC

GAMBIER, Ohio (October 13, 2021) – The Denison University volleyball team won 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-22) on the road at Kenyon College to improve to 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference so far in 2020-21.

Denison improved to 14-5 overall and 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Kenyon lost its ninth match in a row and fell to 2-13 and 0-4. The Big Red have now won eight straight matches against the Yeowoman and are 18-2 against Kenyon since 2008.

The Big Red were led statistically by Sophia Sobota with 11 kills on a .300 attack percentage, Kirby MacKinnon with 29 assists and nine digs, and Jenna Corrao and Daria Rodriguez with 10 digs apiece. Rodriguez, the reigning NCAC Volleyball Athlete of the Week, also added eight kills.

Denison was benefited by 26 attack errors and five service errors by Kenyon. The Big Red actually did not lead any of the major statistical categories in the match as Kenyon led 4-3 on service aces, 8-7 on blocks, 36-34 on assists and 46-41 on digs while both teams had 37 kills.

Denison trailed by scores of 10-6, 13-9 and 15-13 in the first set before scoring five points in a row to go up 18-15. It was then only 22-21 Big Red before a kill by Sobota followed by a service ace from Maddie Kurtz two points later put Denison up one set to zero.

The second set saw the Big Red never trail and lead by scores of 4-0, 8-3, 13-5, 17-9, 21-12 and 24-16.

In the final set, Denison trailed 13-11 before a 5-1 run made it 16-14 Big Red. Then tied 19-19, Denison got three straight points starting with a service error and an attack error by Kenyon, and then a bad set by Kenyon made it 24-20.

Now, the Big Red will take a break from conference action as they prepare for a pair of nonconference matches against the University of Mount Union and Capital University on Saturday, October 16, at The Capital Center in Columbus, Ohio.
