GREENCASTLE, Ind. (October 30, 2021) – The Denison University football team fell 27-10 on the road at first-place and conference unbeaten DePauw University on Saturday.
The Big Red fell behind 17-0 six minutes into the second quarter and were never able to recover. DePauw started the game with an eight-play, 75-yard drive finishing with a 10-yard rushing touchdown, added a 35-yard field goal on its second drive (10 plays, 66 yards), and then after an interception thrown by the Big Red early in the second quarter, finished off the quick four-play, 28-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to make it 17-0.
Then with less than five minutes to go in the first half, the Tigers put the ball on the ground as
Anthony Rooney came up with a fumble recovery at the DePauw 38-yard line.
10 plays and 31 yards later, a 24-yard field goal by
Pat Kramer in the final 18 seconds of the first half made it 17-3.
After another interception followed by a 33-yard field goal by DePauw to start the second half, the Big Red marched 84 yards down the field in nine plays and finished the drive with a one-yard touchdown run by
Andrew Blanchard six minutes into the third quarter to make it 20-10.
Early in the fourth quarter, an interception by Denison's
Sam Secrest set the Big Red up near midfield at the DePauw 45-yard line. However, Denison could not capitalize on the takeaway as after a 13-yard pass from
Drew Dawkins to
DJ Johnson on first down, the Big Red offense stalled at the 29-yard line and had to settle for a long 46-yard field goal that was no good.
Only two plays later, the Tigers connected on a long 69-yard touchdown pass to make it a 17-point game once again.
The Big Red tried to answer with a 13-play, 62-yard drive that got Denison all the way down to the DePauw 12-yard line, but a pass breakup on fourth-and-10 with only six minutes left all but sealed Denison's fate.
Dawkins was 15-for-30 passing for 134 yards,
Trey Fabrocini led the Big Red on the ground with 47 yards on nine carries (5.2 yards per rush), and Johnson led the receiving corps with five catches for 61 yards.
Defensively, Hallinan led the way with 12 total tackles while
Jeff Moore added eight,
Jailen Pierre added six and
Francis Fay and
Cory Swartzmiller both had five. Additionally,
Joey Muncie finished with two sacks while
Clay Denstorff had one sack and matched Muncie with two tackles for loss.
Now with only two games remaining on the season, Denison will play at Hiram College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 6, before hosting their Senior Day at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 13, against Ohio Wesleyan University.
