GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 13, 2021) – The final match of a four-match homestand for the Denison University men's soccer team resulted in a 1-0 win for the Big Red over Wabash College thanks to the first career goal by freshman
Jake Krueger.
Just before the 18-minute mark in the match, a great cross by Denison led to the lone goal of the match as Krueger fired a low shot past the goalkeeper.
With the win, Denison improved to 6-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Wabash suffered its first conference loss of the year and fell to 9-3-1 and 2-1-1. Wabash had previously not lost since over a month ago on September 8.
Additionally, the Big Red and Little Giants have played in three ties in the last five meetings between the two teams entering Wednesday's match, and it nearly looked like the match was destined for overtime again until Krueger stepped up to send Denison to victory.
In the final two and a half minutes, Wabash nearly tied it up as
Dylan Brown had to make his sixth save of the match to preserve the shutout.
The Big Red had a number of near chances to score in the first half as shots by
Vitor Rocha and
Cameron McIntosh were saved in the sixth minute, and then 20 minutes later, Denison's closest opportunity in the first half was a shot by
Ethan Miracle around the keeper that would have scored if not for a defensive save by Wabash.
Starting in the 30th minute,
Luca Vicinelli had two opportunities as he had a shot saved and then missed high a half minute later.
Then less than four minutes into the second half, Miracle had another shot saved.
Brown made three saves in the first half, but in the second half, Wabash nearly got on the board first and got one past Brown in the 53rd minute that went off the far post.
With only one home match remaining on their schedule, the Big Red will play four of their final five matches of the regular season on the road. Denison will play at DePauw University at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 16.
