Women's Tennis blanks Hornets for fifth-straight win

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The 25th ranked Denison women's tennis team collected their fifth-straight victory of the season on Sunday as they swept the Hornets of Kalamazoo College 9-0 at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville. The win moved the Big Red to 5-1 on the season, including their third 9-0 victory in 2020.

Denison's dominance shined early throughout the match, including a 3-0 sweep of the Hornets in doubles play. In No. 1 doubles, DU's top duo of Alex Cash and Hannah Cianciola blew past KC's Laura Hanselman and Sophie Zhuang, 8-1. Sarah Robertson and Sydney Cianciola took care of Helen Pelak and Ella Knight, 8-0, in No. 2 play and Madeline Hart and Devin Gramley battled past Meghan Killmaster and Bella Russo, 8-3, on the No. 3 court.

Carrying a 3-0 lead into singles play, Denison's first win came on the No. 3 court when Hannah Cianciola handed a 6-1, 6-0 straight-set defeat to Pelak. Robertson followed with back-to-back 6-1 wins over Maddy Winarski in No. 2 singles and Monique Brual swept Zhuang 6-1, 6-3 in No. 4 action.

Cash continued Denison's trend in the top-flight thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Hanselman. Junior Devin Gramley coasted past Killmaster 6-0, 6-1 in No. 6 play and Izzy Hart earned a 6-1, 6-2 win in No. 5 singles over Knight.

The Big Red will return to the courts on Saturday-Sunday, March 14-15 when they travel to Fredericksburg, Va. to compete in the Blue-Grey Invitational hosted by the University of Mary Washington. Denison will open with Colby at 9 a.m. on Saturday before playing No. 16 Skidmore at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
