Denison holds off Hope in clash of nationally ranked teams

GRANVILLE, Ohio--  No. 25 Denison won two of three doubles points and picked up three wins in singles play to defeat No. 28 Hope College, 5-4 on Saturday at Mitchell Field House.  The two teams entered with Denison ranked No. 4 in the region and Hope positioned at No. 6 in the region.

The match was clinched by Denison's Monique Brual at No. 5 singles after her 6-2, 6-3 win over Bailey Chorney of Hope.

Denison's Hannah Cianciola picked up a big win at No. 4 singles when she topped the region's 13th ranked player, Sydney Jackson, 6-2, 6-1 to put the Big Red on top, 3-1.  Denison took a 4-1 lead and forced match point when Sydney Cianciola defeated Leah Newhof, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The Flying Dutch battled back with two singles wins as Claire Hallock topped Sarah Robertson, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at second singles and Amanda Bandrowski defeated Alex Cash at first singles, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

Denison got off to a strong start as Cash and Hannah Cianciola defeated Bandrowski and Hallock, 8-7 (10-7) at No. 1 doubles.  Madeline Hart and Devin Gramley defeated Bailey Chorney and Delanie Rebschleger, 8-3 at third doubles.

The Big Red returns to action on Sunday (March 8) when they host Kalamazoo at Mitchell Field House at 10 a.m.
