Box Score 2 GREENCASTLE, Ind. - DePauw's Cami Henry recorded back-to-back complete game shutouts as Denison softball suffered a pair of North Coast Athletic Conference losses to the Tigers on Tuesday afternoon in Greencastle, falling 3-0 in game one and 4-0 in game two.
The Big Red first faced Henry in game one where the freshman held Denison hitless in her eighth complete game of the season, tallying three walks and two strikeouts in the shutout. Henry was opposed by Denison's Taryn Welch who allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings of action with six strikeouts.
In the bottom of the second, the Tigers took the first lead of the game on an RBI single from Sidney Holler to score Grace Smith and put Denison in an early 1-0 deficit.
DePauw added two more runs in the third on RBI base hits from Jade Mejia Wick and Jordyn Fera.
The Big Red made their best push in the top of the sixth when Henry walked Marrae Saucedo and Emily DeSheles to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Claire Powell reached on a fielder's choice to keep runners on first and second, but Saucedo recorded the second out of the inning after she was thrown at third. A pop up to the pitcher ended the inning and gave Denison their first loss in conference play.
In game two, Henry returned to the circle for the Tigers and tallied her second shutout of the day. In seven innings pitched, the freshman allowed zero runs on six hits and added a strikeout for her third of the day. The Big Red countered with senior right-hander Colleen Hoffman who worked 4.1 innings and collected four runs on three hits with a strikeout.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, senior Ricki Asher opened the inning with a single, and three batters later, Emilie Fisher added another Big Red hit to put two runners on with two outs. In the next at-bat, Henry worked out of the inning when Fisher was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice.
After the Tigers added three more runs in the home half of the fifth, the Big Red entered the seventh down 4-0. With one out in the inning, Gabi Dufresne connected on a single down the leftfield line to put a runner on first. In the next at-bat, pinch-hitter Caitlin Ellwanger tallied a single, but after Dufresne advanced to third on an error, Ellwanger was thrown out at second for the second out of the inning. The Big Red were unable to send the run home as they fell to 10-8 overall and 2-2 in NCAC play. DePauw improved to 15-9 overall and 6-0 in the conference with the victories.
Denison will return to action on Thursday, April 11 when they travel to Westerville, Ohio for a doubleheader with Otterbein University set to begin at 3 p.m.
