Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison volleyball improved to 6-1 in NCAC play on Saturday afternoon following a 3-0 sweep of Allegheny College (25-11, 25-21, 25-21) at Livingston Gymnasium. Prior to the start of the match, the Big Red honored their two seniors, Katie Aucamp and Alex Tubbs for your four years of contributions and leadership to the Denison volleyball program.
The Big Red took control in the opening set when they cashed in on 12 of their 22 attempts for an impressive .455 kill rate to go along with six service aces and four blocks. After falling behind 2-1 in the early moments, Denison responded with a five-point scoring burst that included kills from Lucy Anderson and Payton McElfresh and a service ace from Sidney Gossard to put DU ahead, 6-2.
Leading 8-5, Denison turned in a 16-6 scoring run to end the set behind seven Big Red finishes and five combined aces from Emma Woerner and Sophie Tight. With 52 service aces on the season, Woerner is currently three aces away from tying the program's all-time single-season service ace record that was set by Regann Goodwin in 2000 (55).
In the second set, the Gators clawed back to hang tough with the Big Red. After five-straight points put DU in front 10-6, consecutive kills from Jyl Russotti, Elizabeth Debich, and Olivia D'Andrea helped Allegheny tie the match at 10-10. With AC trailing by a point, 21-20, Denison garnered kills from Gossard and Tubbs to take four of the next five points as they entered the final set with a 2-0 lead.
Denison kept momentum in their favor as they opened the third frame, taking 12 of the first 15 points of the set on seven attacking errors by the Gators and back-to-back kills from Woerner. Allegheny continued to keep the match alive as they tallied a 13-6 scoring run that cut the DU lead to one, 18-17.
Three combined kills from Anderson and Woerner built Denison's lead back to 24-21, and following a match-ending ace from Aucamp, the Big Red sealed the victory and improved to 17-6 on the season and 6-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Woerner led the Big Red with 12 kills, 13 digs, three service aces, and a .440 hit percentage. Anderson finished with nine kills and four blocks while Tubbs added four finishes. Tight paced DU with 32 assists and Jenna Corrao collected 14 digs. Allegheny's Kristiana Hardisty posted a team-best nine kills while D'Andrea followed with eight kills and 13 assists.
At 6-1 in the conference, Denison will close out the regular season next Tuesday, Oct. 29 when they travel to Springfield, Ohio for a 7 p.m. matchup with Wittenberg. The winner of Tuesday's match will determine the regular-season champion in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
