Big Red blasts 9 home runs in a sweep of Oberlin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OBERLIN, Ohio--Denison swept Oberlin College in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red took game one 12-0 and game two, 5-3.

It took only five innings for the Big Red to dispatch the Yeowomen in game one.  The Big Red ended it early thanks to the long-ball.  Home runs by Emilie Fisher, Amanda Howell, Ricki Asher and two bombs by Laura Bagan accounted for 10 of Denison's 12 runs.

Fisher led off the game with a blast to left-center and with two outs in the top of the first, Bagan hit a two-run homer to the gap in left-center.

The second inning started the same as the first, this time with a lead-off home run by Asher to right field.  A walk by Fisher and consecutive singles by Sarah Herold and Lauren Secaras set the table for Amanda Howell who promptly cleared the bases with a grand slam over the wall in right.

That was plenty of insurance for Herold who was starting in the circle for Denison.  She went the distance, allowing only two hits while striking out nine.  Herold was also 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.

Howell was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.  Bagan was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored and Asher finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.

The five home runs were a single-game record for Denison.  The previous record of four home runs happened on two occasions (April 22, 2010 vs. Otterbein and April 18, 2009 against Oberlin).

While game one was a blowout, game two was a tightly contested game that saw Denison score three runs in the top of the seventh to leave with the 5-3 win.

The Yeowomen took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning. That's when Denison tied the game with back-to-back home runs by Herold and Secaras.

The score remained tied heading to the seventh.  With one out, Secaras went deep for the second time in the game to put Denison on top, 3-2. Bagan followed with her third home run on the day to dead centerfield.  After a base hit by Mckinly Vazquez, Lindsey Clemson drove her in with a double to left center.

In the bottom of the seventh, Oberlin threatened.  A leadoff walk by Leandre Glendenning got things started. A groundout moved pinch runner Sandra Kibble to second and a base hit by Emma Downing put runners on the corners with one out. Dani Penchalt delivered an RBI single to right, scoring Kibble to make it a 5-3 contest.

Denison head coach Tiffany Ozbun went to Secaras for the two-out save and she retired Emily Tucci on a fly ball to center and struck out Dana Rae Goldstein to end the game.  For Secaras it marked her second save of the season and the eighth save of her career.

Colleen Hoffman got the win in the nightcap and improved to 3-2.  She allowed one earned run and struck out three in 6.1 innings.

In the two games combined, Denison hit .413 and slugged .921 with nine home runs.  Bagan was 3-for-6 with three home runs and five RBIs.  Secaras was 5-for-8 with two home runs and Herold was 4-for-8 with one home run and three runs scored.

Denison (10-4, 5-1 NCAC) returns to Granville for a non-conference doubleheader against Thomas More on Sunday (April 8) at 1 p.m.
