Denison splits doubleheader with DePauw

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Thanks to a walk-off RBI double from Lindsey Clemson in game two, Denison softball split a pair of games with DePauw University on Thursday evening in Granville, dropping the first game 1-0 before winning game two 5-4. The split moved DePauw and Denison to 11-3 in the NCAC play, remaining in a tie for second place in the conference behind first-place Wittenberg (11-1).

After dropping the first game on the afternoon, the Big Red looked to give game two starter Colleen Hoffman a lead to work with from the start.

In the bottom of the first with runners on second and third, senior Lauren Secaras tallied her 17th double of the season to drive home Emilie Fisher and give Denison an early 1-0 lead. Following a walk to Amanda Howell that loaded the bases, junior Laura Bagan hit a single to left center that scored Sarah Herold to extend the Big Red lead to 2-0.

Still leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Fisher drove home Ricki Asher from second on a double down the left field line to tack another run onto the DU lead, 3-0.

In the top of the sixth with Secaras relieving Hoffman after five innings pitched, DePauw entered the scoring column when RBI base hits from Becca St. Germain and Alyssa Nowak helped the Tigers take their first lead of the game, 4-3.

In the home half of the sixth with two outs, Fisher struck again with a triple to right field. Denison tied the game at 4-4 in the next at-bat as Herold laced an RBI single to left center, scoring Fisher.

After Secaras worked through the order in the top of the seventh, the bottom of the inning started with a walk to Howell and a single by Bagan. With runners on first and second and one out, Clemson secured the win with a double down the left field line, scoring the pinch runner Charlotte Happel to give the Big Red their 11th conference victory.

Fisher and Herold each went 3-for-4 in the game, combining for three runs scored and two RBIs.

In game one, runs were hard to come by as Herold and DePauw's trio of Brooke Bandy, Devin Pieper and Emma Baldwin combined to allow only one run on 12 hits with six strikeouts.

The game's lone run occurred in the top of the first with runners on first and third and two outs for the Tigers. With Jordyn Fera looking to steal second, DU's Clemson made a throw to Asher at second. During the throw, Abey Bass took off from third base for the plate and beat the throw from Asher to put DePauw up 1-0 in the first.

It looked like Denison would answer in the home half of the inning with the bases loaded, but a groundout to second by Mckinly Vazquez ended the inning for the Big Red.

Denison also left multiple runners on base during the fourth and fifth innings as the split moved them to 22-8 overall.

Fisher finished the day with five total hits after her 2-for-4 performance in game one. Asher also recorded two hits for DU.

The Big Red will close out the regular season on Sunday, April 29 as they travel to Meadville, Pa. for a twin bill with Allegheny College set to begin at 1 p.m.
