GRANVILLE, Ohio – Despite a 2-1 deficit in doubles play, Denison women's tennis won five consecutive matches in singles competition to defeat DePauw University, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon in Greencastle, Ind. The victory moved the Big Red to 11-7 overall to finish the regular season, including a perfect 3-0 mark in the NCAC West division.
In doubles play, the Tigers took control in the beginning as Megan Galle and Sarah Wilder posted an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles over DU's Emma Alsup and Lauren Hawley, while Meredith Breda and Amanda Showalter defeated the No. 2 pairing of Ashley Hammons and Megan Hickey, 8-6.
In No. 3 doubles, the tide began to turn for the Big Red when Courtney Brown and Madeline Hart edged a 9-8 (7-2) tiebreaker over Colleen Morris and Ali Bush to give Denison their first match victory of the day.
On the singles courts, it was all DU from the start as Hawley won her ninth No. 1 singles match of the dual season, notching a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Morris, and Alsup rallied from a 4-6 first set loss in No. 2 singles to win the final two sets over Galle, 6-4, 6-0, and earn the match victory.
In No. 3 singles, Hickey dropped a 10-8 tiebreaker in the first set to Breda but took a tiebreaker for herself in the second set, 7-6 (7-5). Tied at one set each, Hickey tallied the victory with a 13-11 tiebreaking win in the third set to put the Big Red ahead, 4-2
After Hart won a 9-7 tiebreaker over Bush in the first set of No. 4 play, she finished off the win with a 6-2 victory in the second set. The final Big Red win of the day went to Hammons as she defeated Showalter, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
The Big Red will take two weeks off before competing in the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Friday through Sunday, April 27-29, in Indianapolis, Ind.
