Denison softball takes two from Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio--  Denison completed a doubleheader sweep of the College of Wooster on Friday afternoon, winning both contests by a score of 2-1.  The victories move Denison's record to 8-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

In game one, Sarah Herold went the distance, scattering six hits and one earned run while striking out five.  She improved to 7-3 on the season.  The Big Red broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning when Lauren Secaras led off the inning by reaching on an error by the shortstop.  Secaras advanced to second on a groundout by Amanda Howell, then matriculated to third on a passed ball.  Laura Bagan scored Secaras on a groundout to second.

Wooster tied things up in the fifth on an RBI single by Maddy Chase.

Denison responded in the sixth with the go-ahead run via an RBI double from Howell that scored Emilie Fisher.  In the bottom of the seventh, Herold worked out of a jam.  With runners on second and third, she got Emmalee Cooke to foul out to the first baseman to end the game.

In game two, Denison scored one in the second on an infield groundout by Ricki Asher that scored Bagan who led off the inning with a base hit to center.

The Big Red took a 2-0 lead in the sixth on an RBI single to right field by starting pitcher Colleen Hoffman that scored Lindsey Clemson who reached on a single to center.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Fighting Scots got on the board after Chase led things off with an infield single.  She was bunted over to second by Cooke and Roski delivered the RBI with a base hit up the middle. With the tying run on first, Hoffman retired Copley and Likins to work out of the jam.

Wooster challenged again in the seventh, putting the potential tying run on third with two outs.  Hoffman remained in the game and forced Hitlan to fly out to center to end the game.

Hoffman, who improved to 5-3 with the win, was excellent.  She allowed only five hits and one run while striking out five.  She did not allow a walk while facing 27 batters.

Marissa Norgrove took the loss for Wooster.  She went the distance, allowing nine hits and one earned run while striking out three.

Secaras, who tied the Denison career RBI record on Thursday night against Mount St. Joseph, failed to set the record but she did go 2-for-4.  Clemson was 2-for-3 while Asher and Hoffman went 1-for-3 with one RBI apiece.
