Box Score 2 DANVILLE, Ky.- Sarah Herold fired a complete game, one-hit shutout to lead Denison to a 1-0 win over Hanover College at South Fields on the campus of Centre College. The win came on the heels of an 8-2 loss to Centre to open the day.
Herold took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. She retired the first two batters in the inning, but Dabney Skutt followed with a single to left field to break up the no-hit bid. Herold stuck out seven and walked only one in seven innings pitched.
In the third inning, Herold led off with a double to left center. Emilie Fisher followed with a single to left field. Herold tried to score from second but was cut down at home plate. After a groundout to the pitcher, Amanda Howell delivered an RBI double to right, scoring Fisher with the game's only run.
The top four hitters in the Denison lineup (Herold, Fisher, Lauren Secaras, and Howell) accounted for the Big Red's four hits. Herold got the win and improved to 1-0. Lily Beurman pitched all six innings for Hanover and dropped to 3-4.
Against Centre, Denison trailed 5-0 after four innings. Denison plated two runs in the sixth after a double by Laura Bagan scored Fisher. DU starting pitcher Colleen Hoffman followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Howell from third.
Trailing 5-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth, the Colonels scored three more runs to temper any thoughts of a Denison rally. A two-run, two-out single by Sam Thompson to center locked up the win for Centre.
Hoffman pitched 5.2 innings and took the loss. She allowed eight earned runs while striking out three. Erika Brewer improved to 7-2 on the year by pitching 5.2 innings. She allowed two runs on three hits while fanning three. Abigail Harper was 1-for-2 with two walks. Her two-run homer in the fourth inning gave her squad the 5-0 lead. The game was the 16th of the season for Centre.
Denison will host Rochester College (Mich.) on Friday at 3 p.m.
