WOOSTER, Ohio -- In a North Coast Athletic Conference cross-divisional match, the 29th-ranked Denison women's tennis team took down the College of Wooster, 8-1, on Wednesday at the D.J. Hard Tennis Courts.
Senior Olivia Underwood and sophomore Charlotte Purnode picked up the first point of the match by way of an 8-3 victory at third doubles. The win moved the duo's record to 7-3 on the season. The top doubles tandem of Lauren Hawley and Emma Alsup pushed their record to 12-6 with an 8-6 decision over Morgan Wagers and Rachel Mole. The Scots avoided the sweep with an 8-6 win at the second flight.
The Big Red secured the victory with a clean sweep in singles play. Junior Carol Vitellas extended the DU lead with a straight-set shutout of Mahlet Zemedkun at No. 6 singles. Purnode pushed the match score to 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Elizabeth Brewington at the fifth flight. Alsup recorded the match-clinching point with a pair of 6-1 scores against Mole at No. 2 singles. Hawley was also a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Joy Li at first singles, while Megan Hickey (6-0, 6-2) and Ashley Hammons (6-3, 6-1) were victorious at third and fourth singles, respectively.
With the win, Denison moves to 4-6 on the year while the loss drops Wooster to 5-5 this season. The Big Red will be back in action on Thursday (March 30) when they host 27th-ranked Lewis and Clark College at 4:30 p.m.
