Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, Calif -- A seventh-inning rally in game two propelled the Big Red to a twinbill sweep at Pomona-Pitzer on Monday at Wig Beach Field. Denison won the opener 9-4 before taking game two 8-6.
Trailing 4-1 in the night cap, freshman Lindsey Clemson pulled the Big Red to within one with a base hit to right center in the top of the sixth. Clemson's single brought home senior Ryan Lee and junior Lauren Secaras. Down to their final out and still down a run, freshman Emilie Fisher dropped a single into center to keep DU's hopes alive. Secaras followed with a base hit through the left side. Sophomore Ricki Asher drove in the game-tying run with a base hit to left center. After Lee worked a walk from Emily Rockhill, the Sagehens brought Bianca Cockrell in from right field to pitch. The move did not pay off for Pomona-Pitzer as Cockrell walked Clemson with the bases loaded, scoring the go-ahead run in the form of Secaras. After a wild pitch brought home another run, sophomore Laura Bagan continued the two-out rally with a two-run single to center that extended Denison's new-found lead to four.
The Sagehens tried to pull off some two-out magic of their own after Cockrell doubled in Liz Rodarte in the bottom of the seventh. A walk to Rockhill forced the Big Red coaching staff to pull off some defensive changes that resulted in senior Erin Laswell stepping into the circle. Laswell did surrender an RBI single to Sam Carlson, but the senior was able to get Marya Ornelas to fly out to Bagan in left for the final out of the game.
Senior Kerry Hager delivered a run-scoring single down the left line that allowed Vazquez to cross the plate in the third. Pomona-Pitzer answered in the bottom of the frame with four runs. The inning came to an end when Sofia Baig flew into a double play that saw Hager gun down Izzy Deatherag at the plate.
Secaras picked up the win in relief after giving up two runs on three hits in 4.1 innings of work. Laswell earned her third-career save after allowing one hit before getting Ornelas to fly out to Bagan in left. Clemson led the offensive charge with two hits and three RBIs, while Fisher, Secaras and Bagan also had two hits. Secaras and Lee each scored twice.
In game one, the Sagehens plated a single run in the bottom of the second to grab the early lead. The Big Red responded with a six-run third to go in front by five. Junior Sarah Herold knocked in a pair with a double to center that scored Bagan and Mckinly Vazquez. Hager followed with a base hit to right center that allowed Herold to touch the dish. Asher extended the Denison lead with a double to left that knocked in Hager, while a two-run single by Bagan scored Secaras and Asher.
Rodarte cut into the deficit with a one-out solo homer to center. DU rebuilt a 9-2 advantage with two tallies in the sixth and another run in the seventh. Fisher and Secaras each drove in a run in the sixth, while Bagan blasted a home run to left for the Big Red's ninth tally. Rodarte provided Pomona-Pitzer's final two runs with her second long ball of the day, a two-run shot to center.
Freshman Taryn Welch won her Denison debut, tossing a complete game with three strikeouts. Bagan led the offensive charge by going 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Herold finished with two hits, including a double, while also driving in a pair and scoring two more runs. Hager and Secaras also had two hits each, while Vazquez touched the dish twice.
DU improves to 3-1 on the year with the sweep, while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 5-9 on the year. The Big Red is back in action on Tuesday when they take on Whittier. Game one of the twibill is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
