Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio – After dropping their first set 25-21, Denison volleyball rallied to sweep the next three sets as they defeated Oberlin College 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-17) on Tuesday evening at Livingston Gymnasium.
In their final home match of the regular season, the Big Red committed seven attacking errors in the first set as the Yeowomen countered with kills from Dana Thomas and Lexi Mitchell to take the first set, 25-21.
Oberlin opened the second set with an early 3-1 lead, but DU totaled a 16-5 scoring run thanks to multiple kills from junior Isabella Pivec and two blocks from Leah Reinfranck to win the set and tie the match at one set each.
Denison continued to roll through the third and fourth sets as sophomores Katie Aucamp and Alex Tubbs combined for 12 kills over the final two sets to secure the 3-1 victory over the Yeowomen.
The Big Red were led by Aucamp's 11 kills and eight blocks from Reinfranck. Reinfranck is currently fifth on the all-time blocks list at Denison with 243, and is currently only 14 blocks away from passing Kelsey Bruce (2004-2007) for fourth all-time.
Senior Kristin Thewes led the match with 22 digs, while Julia Miller and Kaileigh Poe, who recently joined the 2,000-assists club at DU, combined for 36 assists to pace the Big Red.
Oberlin received double-digit kills from Mitchell and Thomas, and Samantha Lam's 39 assists were a match-best.
Denison has now won three out of their last four matches and has dropped only four sets over that span.
The Big Red will finish off the regular season on the road, starting with a trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20-21, to take part in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. Denison will open on Friday night with Cabrini University at 6 p.m., followed by a tilt with No. 6 Carnegie Mellon University at 8 p.m.
