Box Score 2 The Denison volleyball team brought their seven-game losing streak to an end with a four-set (25-9, 25-21, 28-30, 25-16) victory over Grove City at the Bishop Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
The Big Red opened their match against Grove City with a dominant 25-9 victory. Denison took a 2-0 lead with a four-point victory, but the Wolverines answered with a marathon 30-28 decision. DU snapped their seven-match skid thanks to a 25-16 win in the fourth set.
Senior Rachele Lock and junior Leah Reinfranck led the offensive attack with 14 and 10 kills, respectively, while senior Sarah Bradley chipped in nine finishers. Kaileigh Poe handed out 22 assists, while Julia Miller logged 15 helpers. Kristin Thewes paced the defense with 21 digs, while Reinfranck had three block assists. The duo also served up two aces each.
In the nightcap against Case Western Reserve, Denison jumped out to a 1-0 lead following a 25-19 decision but the one-loss Spartans answered with 25-15 and 25-16 wins to take a one-point match lead. The Big Red forced a fifth set with a 25-21 victory, but it was Case Western Reserve that took the decisive set 15-13 to improve to 10-1 on the season.
Lock and Reinfranck both racked up 15 kills with the junior also posting a .433 attacking percentage. Poe and Reinfranck dished out 29 assists apiece, while freshman Katie Aucamp served up four of the team's five aces. Defensively, Thewes had 15 digs, while Lock logged 10. Isabella Pivec registered six total blocks, while Reinfranck posted four rejections.
Denison (3-8) wraps up the 2016 Bishop Invitational on Saturday against Adrian at 12 p.m. and Westminster at 4 p.m.
