Box Score 2 DePauw sophomore pitcher Emma Baldwin picked up a pair of victories in the Tigers' doubleheader sweep of the Big Red on Wednesday night in Granville. Denison dropped the opener 10-1 before falling 11-0 in the nightcap.
After surrendering a pair of runs in the top of the first, the Big Red cut the game-one deficit in half in the bottom of the frame when freshman Amanda Howell delivered an RBI single through the right side that scored junior Kerry Hager.
After back-to-back singles in the third put the game-tying run in scoring position, DePauw head Coach Erica Hanrahan brought in Baldwin to try and keep the Big Red off the board. The sophomore did just that as she got Lauren Secaras to ground into a 4-6-3 double play before striking out Howell. The Tiger offense came alive with five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to build a 10-1 lead. Baldwin secured the game-one win by striking out a trio of pinch hitters in the bottom of the fifth.
Both Katie Nichols and Ricki Asher finished 2-for-2 at the plate. Sophomore Sarah Herold took the loss after surrendering seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
After her strong showing in the final three innings of game one, Baldwin got the start for DePauw in the finale. The sophomore retired the first nine batters in order and faced the minimum through the first 4.1 innings before finishing one batter over the minimum in the 11-0 victory.
Herold broke up the perfect game with a bunt single to lead off the fourth, while Howell provided a base hit up the middle in the fifth. Junior Erin Laswell suffered the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
Baldwin tossed eight scoreless innings in the doubleheader, needing just 93 pitches to go 2-0 on the day. She faced one batter over the minimum for the twinbill, scattering three hits with 13 strikeouts. Offensively, Linsey Button and Lauren Godden each went 4-for-7 in the two games, while Sammi Bell had three hits, four RBIs, three runs and a stolen base. Liz Getz finished a home run shy of the cycle after going 3-for-3 in the opener. Getz also scored three times, drove in three more runs and swiped two bases in game one.
Denison falls to 20-14 overall and 9-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while the Tigers improve to 24-13 and a perfect 14-0 in league action. The Big Red will wrap up NCAC play this Saturday when they host Hiram for Senior Day. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
