Denison takes two from Battling Bishops

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison improved to 20-12 after a doubleheader sweep of Ohio Wesleyan from Margaret Sagan Field in Delaware, Ohio.  With the wins, DU moves into second place in the North Coast Athletic Conference with a 9-3 record.  The Big Red took game one, 9-1 before holding off the Battling Bishops for a 4-3 win in game two.

In the opening game, Denison broke a scoreless tie with a five-run third inning powered by a Lauren Secaras grand slam to right field.  The homer was Secaras' fifth of the season.

In the fifth, Amanda Howell's double to center would score Kerry Hager with Denison's sixth run of the game.  Meanwhile, Ohio Wesleyan's offense was being stymied by Big Red starter Sarah Herold who was perfect through 5.2 innings.  Herold would take the no-hitter into the seventh where Ashley Day led off the frame with an infield single.  Later that inning, Sarah Flint would homer to centerfield, nixing Herold's shutout bid.

Herold would go the distance to improve to 12-4 on the year.  She allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out four.  Flint took the loss for OWU and dropped to 4-11.  She allowed seven earned runs in 6.0 innings pitched.

Secaras was 1-for-3 with a walk and four RBIs.  Hager scored three runs while Ricki Asher, Mckinly Vazquez and Herold all had two hits apiece.

In game two, Denison took a 1-0 lead in the first when Vazquez scored on a passed ball by OWU catcher Erin Ferguson.  Denison starter Colleen Hoffman would keep the Battling Bishops off the board until an error in the third inning would allow OWU to take a 2-1 lead.

The Big Red would battle back in the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Secaras and a two-run single by Howell that scored Hager and Vazquez.

OWU would cut the Denison lead to 4-3 in the sixth when Day scored on a DU fielding error.  Things would also get interesting in the home half of the seventh.  After retiring the first Ohio Wesleyan batter, pinch hitter Chloe Bush singled.  Jess Gooden re-entered to run for Bush and advanced to second following a base hit by Amanda Boyle.  A passed ball would put runners on second and third with one out.  Day hit one back to the box, allowing Hoffman to come home with the throw, cutting down Gooden at the plate for the second out of the inning.  Flint walked, loading the bases, however, Hoffman would get out of the jam as cleanup hitter Erin Ferguson flew out to right field for the final out of the game.

Herold was 3-for-4 in game two with one run scored.  By going 5-for-8 on the day she managed to raise her batting average to a conference-best .451.  Hoffman picked up the win, going the distance without allowing an earned run.  She walked two and scattered five hits.

The win marked Denison's 12th consecutive season of 20 wins or more.  The Big Red will return to action on Tuesday, April 26 when they host DePauw at 3:30 p.m.
