Box Score 2 The Denison softball team earned a road split in North Coast Athletic Conference play from Wooster, Ohio on Wednesday. The Big Red won the opener 5-3, but suffered a 2-1 setback to the Scots in the nightcap.
In game one, freshman Colleen Hoffman protected a two-run lead by scattering three hits over the final three innings en route to her first-career save. Hoffman saved the game for starting pitcher Sarah Herold who earned her 11th win of the season after surrendering three runs on five hits in four innings of work.
Freshman Laura Bagan got Denison on the board in the top of the second with a double to left center that scored Lauren Secaras from second. Junior Ryan Lee followed with a two-base hit to right center that plated Amanda Howell and Bagan, giving DU an early 3-0 lead. Following a one-out double by Kerry Hager in the third, Secaras sent a 1-0 pitch over the center field wall to extend the Big Red lead to 5-0.
After walking the first batter she faced in the fifth, Hoffman came back to strikeout Chelsea Copley, before gettin Linea Brouse to fly out to left and Marissa Gorvet to pop up to catcher Anna Balch in foul territory to escape the jam. The Scots were able to get the first two hitters on in the sixth, but a fielder's choice out, a fly out to center and a ground out to short ended Wooster's second threat. In the seventh, Hoffman worked around a two-out double by getting Gorvet to pop out to Lee at short.
Secaras drove in a pair with her fourth homer of the season while also scoring twice. Lee also knocked in two with her ninth double of the year. Hager, Howell and Bagan recorded the other DU hits in game one.
The Big Red took the early lead in game two when Hager doubled in Herold with two outs in the top of the third. Wooster responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single by Jenna Kendall. The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when Kasey Fiedler scored an unearned run on a base hit by Bridget Serrurier. The Scots' Maddy Chase went on to strikeout the side in the seventh to lock up her 11th win of the year.
Hager finished with two of the Big Red's six hits, which included her seventh double of the season, while Secaras, Bagan, Mckinly Vazquez and Herold had the other four. Secaras took the hard-luck loss after allowing just two runs (one earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts over six innings.
Denison moves to 18-12 overall and 7-3 in the NCAC, while the Scots sit at 15-15 and 6-4 in league play. The Big Red returns to action on Saturday (April 23) when they travel to Delaware, Ohio to take on Ohio Wesleyan. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
