The 23rd-ranked Denison women's tennis team closed out the 2016 Midwest Invitational with a 1-1 record following a 5-2 victory over Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday in Madison, Wis. Since they will meet in Greencastle, Ind. for a North Coast Athletic Conference match in two weeks, Denison and DePauw decided to forgo playing a fifth-place match at the Midwest Invitational.
The Big Red held a 4-2 advantage in the match at the completion of the six singles flights. Denison won flights one, two, three and six, while Gusties were victorious at No. 4 and 5 singles. Freshmen Lauren Hawley and Ashley Hammons were both three-set winners at the first and sixth flights, respectively.
After dropping the first set 6-3, Hawley rallied to win the next two via 6-3 and 10-7 scores. Hammons won her opening set 7-5, but saw Katie Aney pull even with a 6-3 decision in the second. The freshman pulled off the victory with a 10-6 win in the super tiebreaker.
Senior Meg Chiumento and freshman Emma Alsup were responsible for DU's other two singles wins. Chiumento dispatched of Lizzy Stanczyk via matching 6-3 scores, while Alsup knocked off Sid Dirks 6-2, 6-4.
Denison need just one doubles point to end the match, and they got it at the top flight where the No. 2 team in the Central Region, Chiumento and Hawley, doubled up Michaela Schulz and Stancyzk, 8-4. The Big Red duo is now 9-4 on the year and 7-3 in their last 10 matches.
With the win, DU improves to 8-7 while the loss drops Gustavus Adolphus to 11-6. The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday (April 12) when they host Wittenberg in their final regular season home match of the season. The match is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
