Denison women's tennis posted its first win over DePauw University since 2011 as they knocked off the 22nd ranked Tigers, 5-4, from Blackstock Courts in Greencastle, Indiana on Saturday. It was a matchup of two top-25 teams that lived up to the billing as No. 23 Denison got a match-clinching win from senior Meg Chiumento to lock up the victory.
Denison was forced to mount a comeback after DePauw won two of three doubles points. The team of Lauren Hawley and Chiumento defeated Maddie Lee and Gretchen Wilder at first doubles, 9-7, to secure one point for the Big Red.
In singles, Hawley evened the match at 2-2 when she dispatched Lee in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Emma Alsup gave Denison a 3-2 lead after a 6-1, 6-1 win over Wilder. Out of the fifth flight, Ashley Hammons topped Colleen Morris, 6-2, 6-3 but DePauw's Ali Bush would follow with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Megan Hickey, moving the score to 4-3 in favor of Denison.
Denison's usual No. 2 player, Courtney Brown, was out with an injury. That pushed Chiumento into her spot in the order where she came through with the winner in a second set tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). DePauw's Megan Galle would close the match with a win at sixth singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
Denison improves to 10-7 and clinches the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division crown with a 3-0 record. DePauw falls to 8-10 and 1-1 in the NCAC West. The Big Red will close out its regular season schedule next Sunday (April 24) at Allegheny College.
