The 23rd-ranked Denison women's tennis team shutout the College of Wooster, 9-0, on Wednesday afternoon in Granville, Ohio.
The Big Red opened the match with a clean sweep in doubles play. The team of senior Sarah Torrence and freshman Megan Hickey got back into the winning column with an 8-0 victory over Aditi Sringeri and Anne-Sophie Haanen at the third flight.
The No. 1 doubles team of senior Meg Chiumento and freshman Lauren Hawley picked up their fourth-consecutive win and eight overall after defeating Rachel Mole and Elizabeth Brewington 8-3. The freshman team of Emma Alsup and Ashley Hammons completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory over Katie Kuzmishin and Morgan Wagers at second doubles.
Hawley and Alsup were both 6-2, 6-1 winners at first and second singles. Hickey picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at the third flight, while Torrence was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 4 singles. Hammons and sophomore Carol Vitellas won via matching 6-0, 6-0 scores at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
With the victory, Denison will carry a 7-6 record into this weekend's Midwest Invitational held in Madison, Wis. The Big Red will open play on Friday morning against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Match time is scheduled for 7 a.m. central time.
