Big Red routs Oberlin in regional clash

The 25th-ranked Denison women's tennis team improved 2-0 against nationally-ranked squads following an 8-1 victory over No. 39 Oberlin on Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville.

The Big Red took a commanding 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. Sophomore Courtney Brown and freshman Emma Alsup got things rolling with an 8-1 win over Jackie McDermott and Mayada Audeh at second doubles.

At the top flight, senior Meg Chiumento and freshman Lauren Hawley picked up their first win as a team following an 8-3 decision over Emma Brezel and Sarah Hughes. The third doubles tandem of Megan Hickey and Sarah Torrence also picked up an 8-3 victory over Ariana Abayomi and Olivia Hay.

Denison won five of six singles matches, all of which came in straight sets. The first singles flight featured a matchup between the first two NCAC Player of the Week honorees this season when Hawley took on last week's award winner Audeh.  Hawley easily dispatched the Oberlin sophomore via 6-1, 6-3 scores.

After shutting out Brezel in the opening set at No. 2 singles, Brown edged out a 7-5 decision in the second to earn the clean sweep. Chiumento improved to 3-0 at third singles following a 6-0, 6-0 win over Erin Johnson. Alsup and Hickey closed out the scoring with victories at the fourth and sixth flights, respectively. Alsup was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Abayomi, while Hickey defeated Hay 6-0, 7-5.

With the win, the Big Red improves to 3-1, while the loss drops Oberlin to 4-3. Denison will face their third nationally-ranked team in less than a month when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. on Saturday (Feb. 27) to take on #15 Chicago. Match time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
