Box Score 2 The Big Red volleyball team split their opening two matches at the 2015 Mount Union Tournament on Friday in Alliance, Ohio. Denison fell to Bethany (25-20, 25-17, 25-22) in the first game before rebounding with a 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 25-13, 25-16) victory over Westminster.
In the four-set win over the Titans, senior Brittany Perry paced the offense with 10 kills, while fellow senior Elena Lein and freshman Olivia Buroker each recorded nine kills. Lein was also strong defensively at the net with three solo blocks and one block assist. Sophomore Leah Reinfranck finished the game with six kills, four aces, five digs and two blocks. Sophomore setter Kaileigh Poe dished out 29 assists to go along with six digs. Sophomore libero Kristin Thewes led the squad with 16 digs and a career-best seven aces. Thewes' seven aces mark the most by a DU player since Taryn Bozorg served up seven against La Roche College in on Sept. 7, 2007.
Against Bethany, Buroker finished with nine kills and seven digs, while junior Rachele Lock had five finishers. Poe handed out 24 assists, while Thewes served up two aces. Sophomore Kristen Brennan paced the defense with 11 digs, while Reinfranck finished with four blocks.
Denison (2-1) closes out play at Mount Union on Saturday with matches against Grove City (10 a.m.) and Ohio Wesleyan (12 p.m.).
