DU wins three setter with Pioneers

The Big Red volleyball team remained perfect at home following a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-23) victory over Marietta on Wednesday night in their first match on the newly renovated floor inside Livingston Gymnasium.

Denison capitalized on multiple Pioneer mistakes in the opening two sets as they cruised to a 2-0 match lead. The Big Red posted hitting percentages of .360 and .321 in the first two sets, respectively, while their opposition had attacking percentages of .000 and .074. Marietta jumped out to a lead in the third set and made it close at the end, trailing 24-23. However, a thunderous kill by freshman Isabella Pivec secured the sweep for DU.

The Big Red spread the wealth offensive in their win over the Pioneers. Junior Rachele Lock led the team with nine kills to go along with two block assists, while freshman Olivia Buroker logged seven kills and eight digs. Sophomore Leah Reinfranck, senior Elena Lein and Pivec all had five kills, while Lein also posted a match-best five blocks. Reinfranck and Pivec chipped in three block assists apiece.

Sophomore Kaileigh Poe and freshman Lexie Seward combined for 28 of the team's 34 assists. Buroker and sophomore Kristin Thewes both served up three aces, while Denison logged nine points via the serve as a team. Thewes also led the squad with nine digs.

Devin Walter paced Marietta with nine digs, while Julia Moskaluk dished out 15 assists and posted nine digs. Mary Ervin and Erica Denallo each added seven digs.

DU improves to 6-3 on the year, while Marietta falls to 4-3. The Big Red returns to action next Tuesday (Sept. 22) when they travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene for a 7 p.m. match.
