7-run fourth sends DePauw past Big Red in NCAC opener

Box Score

DePauw broke a 2-2 tie with a seven-run fourth inning and that's all the Tigers would need as they topped Denison, 9-2 in game No. 2 of the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Softball Tournament from Greencastle, Ind.

In the pivotal fourth inning, DePauw led off the frame with a single and a double, putting runners at second and third with one out.  An error by Denison starting pitcher Lauren Secaras allowed the first run of the inning to score.  Linsey Button would follow with an RBI bunt single and Lauren Godden would drive in Elizabeth Getz with a single to left center.  With DePauw leading 5-2, the Big Red made the call to the bullpen as Sarah Herold took to the circle for the third time this season.  DePauw would touch up Herold for two home runs and when the inning ended the Tigers held a commanding 9-2 lead.

Things started strong for the Big Red when senior third baseman Julie Rooney sent the first pitch of the game from DePauw starting pitcher Kahla Nolan over the wall in left-center for her second home run of the season.

With one down in the top of the third, Rooney would strike again with a single to centerfield on a 2-2 pitch from Nolan.  Herold followed with a bunt base hit down the third base line. An errant throw by Nolan allowed Rooney to cruise into third base.  Two pitches into Kerry Hager's at-bat, Rooney would score on a wild pitch, giving Denison a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers would answer in the bottom of the third via a two-run single by Button to center, scoring Getz and Sammi Bell.  With no one out and a runner on second, Secaras would work out of the jam.

Secaras took the loss and dropped to 11-7 while Nolan improved to 14-7.  With the loss, Denison (19-18) will face Allegheny (14-14) in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday in Greencastle.  DePauw (28-12) remains in the winner's bracket and will face game one victor, Wittenberg at 2:30 p.m.
