Women fall in NCAC title match

In a rematch of last year's North Coast Athletic Conference Championship match, the top-seeded DePauw Tigers came away with a 6-0 victory over the second-seeded Denison Big Red in Gambier, Ohio.

The Tigers set the tone in doubles with a 3-0 sweep in convincing fashion.  At first doubles, Claire Marshall and Maggie MacPhail defeated Taylor Hawkins and Meg Chiumento, 8-2.

At No. 2 doubles, Rochell Issa and Courtney Brown fell to the team of Julie Wittwer and Kaitlin Pickrel, 8-2.  At third doubles, DePauw's Taylor Mahr and Carolyn Huerth handed Heather Abzug and Emily Holloway an 8-1 loss.

In singles play, Huerth picked up DePauw's fourth point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Abzug out of the sixth flight.  Pickrel clinched the championship with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Denison's Holloway.

The sixth point was finished out of the first flight because it featured two regionally ranked opponents going head-to-head.  DePauw's Marshall defeated Denison's Hawkins, 6-1, 6-1 capping off the tournament.

Denison's season comes to a close with a record of 15-8.  They were ranked 24th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings.  No. 14 DePauw improves to 14-8 with the victory.
