DU improves standing with sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Denison Big Red climbed closer to a spot in the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament thanks to a doubleheader sweep of Wooster on Wednesday in Granville. The Big Red needed just five innings to win the opener (12-4) before taking the finale, 10-7.

Denison moved to 6-6 in league play with the sweep and sits just two games behind fourth-place Allegheny (7-4-1), who the Big Red swept in a doubleheader earlier this season. The Fighting Scots fell to seventh in the standings with a 5-9 mark.

The Big Red scored in every inning and had every player in the lineup register at least one hit in game one. After falling behind 1-0 through a half inning, DU answered with three runs in the bottom of the first. Starting pitcher Lauren Secaras laced a single up the middle that scored Julie Rooney and Mckinly Vazquez, while a ground ball by Erin Laswell allowed Kerry Hager to score from third. Denison added two runs to its lead in the second. Rooney knocked in Anna Balch with a ground ball to short, while Emily Lipsitz scored from third when Vazquez lifted a ball into short center field that was caught by shortstop Carly Schoenstein.

The Scots pushed across a run in the third, but Denison answered with two in the frame. After stealing third, Laswell was able to score on a throwing error by catcher Paige Goldberg. Lipsitz drove in the other run with a two-out triple to right center. Balch scored from first on the extra-base hit by Lipsitz.

Wooster produced a pair of runs in the fourth, but once again the home team doubled their opponent's output in the bottom of the inning. Vazquez opened the fourth with a triple to left center. With two outs, Laswell lined a base hit through the left side that allowed the freshman to score. Following a Ryan Lee single that put runners at first and second, freshman Marlie Mounts launched her first-career home run to center.

After keeping the Fighting Scots off the board in the fifth, Denison needed just one run to bring the game to an end. Rooney kicked off the inning with a double to left center. Vazquez followed with an infield single to short. Rooney moved to third on the play after Schoenstein made a throw to first to try and get Vazquez. In an attempt to get the ball back to her pitcher, first baseman Stephenie Little made an errant throw that also eluded Jenna Kendall at third and allowed Rooney to score the game-ending run.

Rooney, Vazquez and Balch all registered two hits and scored two runs. Rooney finished with two doubles, while Vazquez and Lipsitz each had a triple. Mounts drove in a game-high three runs with her home run, while Secaras and Laswell each knocked in a pair. Laswell also stole her first base of the season. Secaras picked up her seventh win of the year after allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Wooster grabbed another early lead thanks to a four-run top of the first. After going scoreless in their first two trips to the dish, the Big Red finally broke through with two runs in the third thanks to a two-RBI double by Secaras. Denison grabbed the lead in the fifth with three runs on four hits in the fourth. Vazquez doubled in Rooney and Lipsitz before coming around to score on a base hit by Hager. DU added to its lead with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth frame. Rooney plated Balch and Lee in the fifth, while Lee, Mounts and Lipsitz each drove in a run in the sixth.

Wooster slowly chipped away at the deficit in the seventh, closing the cap to five with one out. After an RBI single by Little, Head Coach Tiffany Ozbun brought game-two starter Laswell back into the game. The sophomore struck out the first batter she faced since returning after her first-inning exit. Demi Hart, who popped out to third in her only other at bat against Laswell, lined a single into left center that scored Julia Williams and Schoenstein. With the runs already in, Hart tried to extend the single into a double but was gunned down at second for the final out of the game. Hager and Lee both picked up assists on the putout by Mounts.

Vazquez, Hager, Secaras and Lee also recorded three hits to lead the DU attack. Vazquez and Hager each scored twice, while Rooney, Vazquez and Secaras had two RBIs apiece. Five of Denison's 18 hits were extra-base knocks. Vazquez had two doubles, while Rooney, Secaras and Lee also had two-base hits. Secaras picked up her second win of the day, this time in relief. The freshman went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs and scattering three hits. She also struck out four batters and walked four.

Maddy Chase suffered both losses of the doubleheader, falling to 6-9 on the year. On the day, she tossed nine innings and gave up 19 runs on 27 hits. Goldberg collected three hits and scored four times over the course of two games, while Hart drove in four runs on two hits.

Denison (14-16) takes a break from NCAC action on Thursday when they travel to Capital for a doubleheader against the Crusaders. Game one from Bexley, Ohio is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
