Big Red evens NCAC mark with Oberlin sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison rebounded from a pair of losses on Tuesday with a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Oberlin on Wednesday in Granville. The Big Red doubled up the Yeowomen, 6-3, in game one before routing Oberlin, 13-0, in five innings in the nightcap.

In the opener, Denison grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Julie Rooney opened the frame with a base hit up the middle. With two outs, freshman Lauren Secaras drove in Rooney with her seventh double of the season to give the home team a 1-0 lead. After an infield single by Erin Laswell put runners on the corners, Ryan Lee delivered single to right center that scored Secaras. Marlie Mounts followed with a base hit that allowed Laswell to touch the dish.

The Yeowomen clawed back into the game with two runs in the second and another in the third, tying the contest at 3-3. DU regained the lead in the bottom of the third when a ground ball hit to short by Lee allowed Kerry Hager to score from third base. Denison added two insurance runs in the second with a two-out, two-run double off the bat of Lee. Laswell and Hager both scored on the Lee extra-base hit.

In top of the seventh, Oberlin looked like they had something going with a one-out base hit to left by Katie Pieplow. However, the OC pitcher got a little greedy as she attempted to extend her single into a double. The hard shot bounced off the fence and right to Hager who fired a frozen rope to Mounts at second. Mount quickly applied the tag to the retreating Pieplow to record the second out. Mounts would record the final out of the game when she snagged a soft liner by Dana Rae Goldstein.

The Big Red pounded out 13 hits in the opener, with three players recording multiple hits. Hager and Lee both went 3-for-4 in game one. Hager scored twice and stole one base, while Lee recorded a double and drove in four runs. Laswell also collected two hits and scored two times. Secaras picked up the win inside the circle after surrendering three unearned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. In addition to her performance inside the circle, the freshman also had a double, an RBI a run scored and stole a base.

In game two, the Denison offense erupted for a season-high 13 runs on 14 hits, which included four extra-base knocks. After a scoreless first frame, DU pushed across five runs in the second thanks to five hits and three costly Oberlin errors. Lee scored the Big Red's first run after she successfully executed a delayed double steal with Mounts. With runners at second and third, senior Emily Lipsitz dropped a single into right that scored Mounts and Anna Balch, who both reached on Oberlin errors. Balch was able to score on the play because of a misplayed ball in right field. With the bases loaded and two outs, Secaras dropped a single down the left line that scored both Rooney and Mckinly Vazquez, pushing DU's lead to 5-0.

Errors continued to be a problem for the Yeowomen in the third as two of the Big Red's four runs were unearned. Prior to OC's two miscues, Balch doubled in Lee from third, while Mounts scored on a wild pitch by reliever Sami Mericle. Balch added to the lead when escaped a rundown after Pieplow lost control of the ball when trying to tag out the sophomore catcher. With two outs, Rooney was able to score from second on dropped fly ball just off the infield grass. In their final trip to the plate, the Big Red tacked on four more runs off six hits. Balch, Lipsitz, Vazquez and Hager all provided run producing hits in the inning.

Laswell capped off her strong night inside the circle by retiring the side in order in the fifth inning. The sophomore needed just 59 pitches to pick up her first shutout of the season. Laswell scattered five hits and struck out three in the victory. She also turned DU's only double play of the day after snagging a liner by Jenny Goldsmith before flipping the ball over to Lipsitz to double off Caroline Hamilton at first.

Offensively, six different players recorded two hits, while three touched the dish three times. Both Rooney and Balch had two hits and three runs, while Balch also drove in two runs. Vazquez, Hager, Lee and Lipsitz all had a pair of hits, while Mounts came around to score three times and swiped a bag. Lee also had two runs and stole two bases, while Secaras drove in a pair.

The Big Red showed their aggression on the base paths as they stole five bases during the doubleheader, the most since Head Coach Tiffany Ozbun took over the team in 2008. As a team, DU is a perfect 16-for-16 in stolen base attempts this season.

Denison improves to 12-14 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC, while Oberlin falls to 2-21-1 and 1-9 in league play. The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Springfield, Ohio for a conference twinbill against Wittenberg. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
